Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Carista OBD2 users- DPF Regen Amarok V6

Looking to buy the Carista OBD2.
    Can anyone answer this please-
    - can you start a DPF regen on the free version?
    - can you do the DPF regen using the iphone app only (no mobile service) when remote for example? Or do you need a data connection to use it?
-Does the free version monitor and display soot levels? Maybe someone could screen shoot what the app shows?
-anyone here used the ‘DPF Monitor for V*G iPhone’ app for $9.99 with the Carista dongle?

    Cheers

    Background-
Have spent $2300 in the past year, first time cleaning ash from the DPF, then last week on limp mode clearing and forced regen at workshop.
Wanting something to monitor the DPF and be able to regen the DPF if it goes into limp mode with an iPhone.

Wish I had of pulled the trigger last year to DPF delete and retune but was still under warranty.

    Hi Flying finn,

Not sure for iPhone but I have the Carista app for android & it will only allow DPF regen enable after purchasing the subscription.

I am assuming it should work remotely as it connects via Bluetooth connection. I might trial this to confirm.

VAGDPF is also a very useful phone DPF monitoring app.
VCDS is also a useful tool to have (Diagnostics)

    Check out the following thread
    DPF questions

Lucas_R may be able to provide more info regarding the iPhone side.

This is not my photo, but this is what the DPF info looks like in Carista. Just a very simple soot mass calculated number (you will get to know your car to know how many grams is full) and then a ‘Start DPF regen’ button. But this is all the info you need really.

      As for your other questions…
I have the paid version and its been years since I used the free one - so can’t answer what you can do in the free version…..but i dare say this is classed as a ‘premium’ feature.

I have never tried to use Carista with no phone/internet service.

As an FYI the $80 it costs to have a 12 month subscription to Carista is just loose change compared to the cost and inconvenience of a trip to a mechanic.

As for the ‘DPF monitor for VAG’ app, i just purchased this app a few weeks ago. Its good and tells you info from the various sensors, but you cannot trigger a regen using this app.

Fantastic exactly what I was after. Cheers guys.
After spending $600 last week on diagnostics and regen burn- $70 for the dongle and $80 annual subscription is a bargain.
Have ordered and will update once I get it up and running to assist others.

Lucas R I noticed in another thread you have both Carista OBD2 and the Evo. Is the Evo worth the extra cost?
And is the DPF Monitor for V*G app compatible with the Carista Evo dongle.

            Some info
            Just a moment...

Carista blog also has other info.
            Carista

Carista is limited in displaying DPF data. Even with subscription. Utilising a combo of apps as mentioned above is the way to go.

People mention they never have issues
            I suspect 3 contributors
            1. They must be driving on the highway, country roads or towing, on every drive.
            2. They have decided to contribute to greater NOx levels by removal of emission systems.
            3. There vehicle was not on the assembly line Monday or Friday.

The Evo model is faster to load and save changes. If you use it often then yes its worth it. If you use it once in a blue moon then no.

And yes the DPF monitor for VAG app connects to the Carista dongle to read data.

                  Hiya,

I bought LucasR's older model Caristo after ordering the EVO version (as I love shiny better things and a mechanical nerd) but then shortly after I did, the EVO model arrived, so am more than happy to pass on the Caristo from LucasR (and it works, I tried it), so let me know if you are interested.

Happy to pass it on for the same as Lucas did for $40 incl postage.

                  Cheers
