Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Fault 617752 - Selector Lever Park Position Lock Switch

Hello everybody. I am constantly getting the following code with flashes of warning signs being displayed on my dash. Brought it into VW service centre, they acknowledge that the code is stored in the car, but say that they wont fix it under warranty unless the warning sign stays on.

I did a google search on this and came up with a few search results. Was wondering if anyone here has experience this?

haku: Hi. Yes, I've seen this intermittent error on many Golf mk7s. It's a DTC that is particularly stubborn and I've not been able to fix it permanently (I'm aware of a forum colleague that has even pulled-apart the lever switch and cleaned it - but the error still re-appears).

My hypothesis (and it's just that - a guess), is that it's probably due to driver behavior. I've noticed on my car that the DTC tends to appear if I turn-off the ignition key before moving the gear lever to the park position. Doesn't happen all the time, but it's more likely to happen under this condition - just an observation.

    Don
Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.

Hi Don. Thanks for the reply. I have been told by VW that this happens when the driver shift through the levers quickly thus the car did not detect the right sequence. However, this error came about 3 times in the last two days and I did not move the gear lever at all. It seems like a sporadic error.

The car is still under warranty. But VW said it is not covered as they require the warning to stay on. I initially let that go and could deal with the minor annoyance as it generally happens at low speed. However, the last two times, the error came up suddenly while I was driving on the freeway! Surely this is not safe?

I am quite curious that if a lot of people are facing this issue has anyone went back to VW to get this fixed? Sounds like its a pretty common problem.

P/S: A did a search on the forum for this error code. But nothing came up. Sorry if I have opened a new thread for a topic which may have been covered else where.

I've seen this error time and time again. The only way to resolve it is to replace the shifter mechanism. Keep at the dealer about it.
