  • GTI 40 edition - RATTLE

    First post.

Firstly picked up my 40 only last week. Really happy with it, my first VW.

Only qualm I have is there seems to be a faint-ish rattle coming from the engine bay only when the engine is under load. Particularly between 2-3.5K RPM.

It almost sounds like someone is dragging a chain on a tin surface, except they are half a K down the road haha. Weird I know. I can't replicate the sound when the car is not moving.

Anyone else experienced this? If so what is the fix? This is a MY16 40th built in June.

I am taking it back to VW on Friday anyway. Only 250ks done.

Can't fault the car in any other way - but for 50K you would expect better.

    Comments appreciated.

    Wastegate rattle most likely.

Does it sound like this by any chance?

        or this:

Like a vibration becoming apparent around 2.5k and then disappearing? if it is that, that's the fuel lines not the waste-gate.

It certainly sounds like you're describing the wastegate rattle that affects almost all cars with this engine/turbo combo (Golf R, Audi S3, etc etc).

Anyone know if there is a TPI/TSB for this for the mk7 ? I have not heard of it to date. Bugger ... check these out:

            * Fuel lines
            * Wastegate rattle (was an mk6 issue .. not again!)
            * Soundaktor (more of a buzzing sound, maybe not related)

rattling noise under the dash acceleration. - GOLFMK7 - VW GTI MKVII Forum / VW Golf R Forum / VW Golf MKVII Forum
            VWVortex.com - Question about soundaktor

There was a lot of mucking around with the clips on the Mk6 with dealers feigning ignorance etc.

Hope you get it sorted out.

Ah yes the dreaded wastegate rattle- you'll find your ever helpful local VW service department will fob you off with "its a charactertistic of the engine"....seems like they are spending too much fixing Dieselgate to fix this issue.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will not accept VW telling me this sound is normal. Will keep you all posted.

I read elsewhere the downpipe could also be the culprit? Does anyone else own a 7 gti or r with this issue?

Doesn't sound like this! More like a ringing sound.

^ The way you describe it GTI40 sounds exactly like the Wastegate rattle many R's (but not all!) have: as the GTI40 effectively shares the R's motor, one would expect similar proportions of GTI40's to have the rattle. There are a couple of guys here who have replaced their DP with good effect however this also requires a software tune (Stage 2) and loss of drivetrain warranty (not too mention $3-3.5k of further expenditure). I have however read on UK forums of a few people who havent had success with the DP replacement removing the rattle. I wasn't prepared to do this with my Wolfsburg R, and was absolutely stonewalled by VWA so ended up selling it as the sound ruined the experience for me.

I replaced my DP last week and the ringing sound is gone. I also cable tied my fuel lines as i had that one as well! Car is quiet now!

What DP did you get? Did you get a tune as well?

The tech noted the noise. It is going in and they said it will have to stay for 2 days. Will find out the date tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

^ Interesting: just saw the thread on the other forum, instead of replacing the turbo they should be replacing the DP!
