Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

          • I changed my setting over the weekend to "Map 6" and it is more linear across the board now, with less of a sudden rush of power, like a diesel like delivery and more in line with a petrol like, smoother delivery.

Ah, that's interesting. I'm still on the default map and I don't like the non-OEM power delivery. It feels like it's lost its smoothness. I need to do some investigating I think after the first service in about a month's time.

              • Some feedback after fitting the JB1 to my 162tsi Skoda superb....Pretty darn good! Amazing upgrade for the $$$. Thanks again to the OP!
Install took 30 minutes tops and I lifted the car on one side and used a jack stand for safety. Took off every bolt for the plastic pan but left the very last one on so easy to refit. Have put the unit in the battery box along with the USB cable (tight fit but all ok).

I am using map1 and car pulls like a freight train. Wheel spin like mad in 1st, 2nd and into 3rd if too heavy with the right foot. I find it best to be progressive with the accelerator and once past the 'wheelspin' range I can be as heavy as I want. Have had many surprised drivers seeing a large station wagon pull away with such speed. Have not really had problems with a turbo rush past the 2000rpm range where the boost comes on as I moderate the accelerator. If I go crazy WOT from standstill then the TC kicks in and lights flash everywhere and it bogs down. at 2krpm to about 6krpm it really really goes hard. The car has been transformed without sacrificing fuel consumption as below 2krpm there is little to no boost. I have experimented with some conservative map6 settings which I will probably run in the height of summer so as not too get heat issues - probably dial down to 4ish + boost. I will be doing some logging and seeing how the car is responding but having too much fun right now. Have also bought a OBDeleven which has some live data for fuel trims so will be handy when I get around to it. I have also mucked around with the OBD to do some VCDS changes but its doing my head in but have managed to get traffic reports enabled.
All in all this is the best $600 I have spent and even at full price it is worth every cent!

                • Few conclusions and observations so far about the Clubsport + JB1 combo in particular:

I have experienced some non-linearity on both map 1 and 6 but only for a moment when I suddenly floor it. It's as if the car instantly hits some boost or torque threshold and holds back for a split sec before the revs continue to build up. If I go more progressively on the throttle it does not happen. No lights flash, this is not related with traction.

The Clubsport's over-boost function complicates things and hinders consistency. Sometimes it comes on sometimes it doesn't (I don't always remember to try and drill a hole with my right foot on the floor to activate it) so you don't always get the same amount of extra power. I've timed 60-160km/h accelerations with racing GPS device (no smartphone GPS) and I've seen some map 6 runs being almost identical to stock runs with the map 6 only winning maybe 0,5" at the upper end, while on others the JB1 shoves 1" off the stock time, all other conditions identical. That clearly shouldn't be the case if the car had gained a permanent 50-60bhp/100Nm across the entire range.

In a way, with the JB1 you ensure at least that you get the full stock power of 290ps+++ (more like 300-320) every time and if you always remember to bury your foot as hard as possible and are in 3rd gear and above you get close to the 350-360 mark. This is why you either need to code out the over-boost completely or use a piggyback that controls absolute pressure and makes up for the non-overboost situations, which is what the JB4 will hopefully be able to do.

Also, at least on stock Bridgestones, don't expect to bury your foot and go at anything below 60km/h, the torque overwhelms the tyres easily. Losing a few tenths and going easier up to 3rd gear works better. With that sort of modulation that might sound slow, I was ahead from a stock Golf R from a 20km/h 1st gear roll with the gap increasing (in my favor), and that was on map 6 and without over-boost activated (didn't even hit the kick-down switch). Considering that was 1st gear and I had to beware of the wheel-spin I was quite impressed. From the way it looked, if we rolled from 2nd 50/60km/h it wouldn't even come close.

All in all, I'm happy to have it on the car. Certainly gets the car to the next level of performance that coupled with the car's handling/cornering ability makes it impossible I think for almost any non-hyper exotic to escape from it on road or track. But, there are some complications to fully exploit it, that should be sorted with the coming JB4 upgrade and a set of better tyres.

                  • Nice detailed description Ringo. I wondered how the over boost function might work with the JB1.

Was the Golf R stock or did it have a JB1 fitted too? The extra weight of the R would hold it back compared with the trim 40th, especially if it was stock.

R had just a resonator delete but otherwise stock. With my foot far away from the overboost switch and custom lower boost @4k rpm on map 6 (was actually out for testing, the run was completely unplanned) I reckon I must have hardly had 320ps at the time. The extra weight is negated imo from the fact that starting from as low as 20km/h and especially 1st gear, I had to battle wheel-spin (during the 1st run) while the R driver just floored it and launched forward and I wasn't going faster than him before 100km/h. On the 2nd attempt that I went easy on the throttle I managed to launch quicker, stay ahead and have an ever-growing gap to my favor.

If it was attempted from say 50-60km/h and 2nd gear I agree that I would have had a huge advantage as the car just instantly goes at anything at and above those speeds (which are of bigger real-life importance).

Launches and drag-races don't really concern me and I never do traffic light racing etc. the fact that run took place was merely down to the curiosity of the R driver (which was very impressed in the end). But it just shows that over-boost complicates things and needs to go.

Michelin PSS going on the car in 2 days time and the 034 dog mount in about 7-9days. I'll report back in the next couple of days on the difference the PSS makes to wheel spinning/hopping.

I'm still on Map1 coz I haven't had a chance to fiddle around with the map settings. Just out of curiosity, what Map6 settings are you on at the moment if you don't mind me asking?

Map 6 asks for less low end boost to begin with, and I've further dropped the boost at 4k rpm by half a psi after contact with BMS, to see if it cured the momentary hesitancy, but I don't think it did. It has to do more with how suddenly the throttle is requested than with specific rpm so I switched back to map 1 and will re-do those runs.
