you would be crazy to buy a used one in my opinon.
in WA (at least), say you buy a used one for 47 grand or so, then you add the govt fee's its more like low 50's on road for a used R with maybe 18months warranty (which might have been flashed btw).
i just bought a brand new DSG in the colour of my choice for 55 on road.

I've had 'high powered' small awd cars before & this R is a way for me to caputre that magic in a modern package

when she's pushing 350+hp it will be awesome.

I guess so but its better then buying a new car and as soon as you drive out you've lost $5k. On a $47k car it's only $1,450 stamp duty, still under $50k. I'd rather buy second hand I always have. Plus if you finance well then you got that on top of whatever your purchase price is.

You can generally tell by the person selling the car if they would be the type to tune or not or at least thrash a car.

      • losing money on new or s/hand cars is always going to happen - its all about paying for the enjoyment & being happy with your choice
i could have paid cash for my car, but I would rather keep that small % of $ in my mortgage redraw/offset account.

Thats a crazy price. I'm looking at a Demo R in Blue DSG with 200kms for 58.5 driveaway. How on earth did you manage 55?

no trade in or corporate discount - i financed the whole deal at 2.8%

I just bargined hard & tbh I didnt care too much if I bought one at all - that was the key i think

55k which included all onroads (neally $4000 in WA) for a april 2016 DSG R in grey - I didnt want a sunroof or Driver assist/radar cruise control or whatever it is.

That's a great price. I got $58 I think with roof and driver assist

                  • Then you did very well plus getting 2.8%. I mean that's lower than banks will give you for a home loan. I'd hate to be the sales guy at the other side of the desk LOL. I would personally take the driver assist.

I wasnt interested in DA (and I dont like what it does to the look of the grille either), this R is just my 'fun' car, it will only do a max of a few 1000 kms a year & not driven in heavy traffic.

                        • I guess this is somewhat of a good comparison....

It's not the Clubsport but very similar (SEAT Leon Cupra )

How does this relate to the Clubsport ED40 Golf GTI ... why not wait for the 2018 Golf GTI with less weight?

I think that one is the GTE?

That is one of the videos (was much older but I see it was re-posted 1st of June 2016 for some reason) that explains quite clearly the differences between the two cars when driven hard. Better turn-in, more agile, livelier front axle, improved feed-back and better corner performance. In fact the AWD R is more under-steery than the FWD Cupra. Good and important point made by Owen, that an R is no EVO in the way the AWD drives the car.

The EVO's AWD system with the Active Center Differential and a rear lsd is far more complex and capable to actually make the car go faster than the much simpler Haldex AWD implementation in an R or S3 that is basically only good for reducing traction loss (but not grip). Many people (more than you'd imagine) are unaware that not all AWDs are the same and hence the first thing they think of when they hear 4-wheel-drive is EVO-like superior grip under all conditions but this is far from the truth.

That combined with a more cruising-oriented, less track-focused chassis setup is where all the difference is made and felt during hard driving. And the reason why the R is slower around tracks than a Cupra or a Clubsport.
