Actually, there's one thing with that really grates me with the DSG. I just can't throw down two gears at once. And on auto mode it likes to select a higher gear too early. And that's killing my life in traffic. I start frantically hitting the paddle to override it, especially when I'm coasting to a stop, due to my habit of engine braking.

Does anyone else keep flicking through modes during a trip ? I wish I could change modes quickly through the steering wheel.
I can't say I have any of these issues. Whenever I want to be in control of the gears and use the engine as I would in a manual gearbox (which is 90% of the time) I switch the DSG to Manual regardless of drive mode and it does exactly what I want it to: keep a gear longer, engine-brake, drop 2 or 3 gears at once (actually you just flick the left paddle as many times as you want and it downshifts I don't understand how you have problems there). The only time I switch it to D is when I am tired and just want to slowly drive back home and don't want to bother with the traffic at all. For everything else, the manual mode does it better. I find S pretty useless as it usually revs the **** out of it while never even being in the right revs for the road conditions (and how could it be really...)

Imho, the DSG in Manual mode offers the best of both worlds. As good a control of the engine, power delivery and gears with none of the inherent weaknesses of a manual transmission like upsetting the dynamics during clutch engaging/disengaging and worse control due to mostly one hand on the wheel (especially when driving fast), and significantly longer time to change through gears.

      • A DSG tune is money well spent IMHO.

            • Does anyone know if a 235 width tyre will fit on the std Ruby wheels.

              • Just wanted to say hey, Ive been on here for a few years with a stage 2+ mk5 Jetta, and I have had my GTI 40 Years for a month now.
Ive removed the front number plate surround and made a custom backing for the plates to cover the holes. Hope to get her tuned in the new year

Good job on the plates. When you're ready for the tune, look at the JB1. You'll be amazed at the value for money. Best 600 bucks you'll ever spend. I love it.

                      • Had the Sonax nanoguard ceramic protection on mine, always get impressed by how good it looks whenever it's washed and the shine comes back.

                        • Has anyone else noticed that when you give it all the herbs in 3rd gear and above (when overboost is supposed to kick in) that the kw performance gauge only gets to 195kw. Thought they would have designed it to show the full 213kw so you can see you're getting full power.

Yep. Noticed that after I put the JB1 on. 195 must be full scale, LOL, nowhere near enough.

                            • I just saw a white 40 years on the road (well parked at Chester Hill) during lunch break. Bought at Five Dock. Anybody from here?

Stands out from a mile. Personally couldn't deal with a white one. Just too confronting.

                              • Has anyone tuned their GTI 40 years yet? Do you get much wheel spin and is it a really noticeable difference?
