Still enjoying driving the car but get the feeling the car is just too simple to drive. Too many features that take the feel out of driving.
No manual option in the Wagon. Paddles can’t replicate the feel.
Lane guidance, which is coercing you back into the lane.
Parking assist that’s constantly turning down the radio and letting you know somethings too close.
Adaptive cruise (ok, this one is great on a long drive)
I dunno. Best car I’ve owned, heaps of fun to drive, great sound system, but if this is where technology is taking driving, it’s definitely going to be less fun in the future.

This is what I’m thinking too. I’m thinking of switching off lane guidance to get some fun back. The park pilot is annoying, agreed.
The CarPlay is hit an miss. If I connect before turning the car on I have success all the time. If I start the car first and then connect my phone it’s hit and miss. Niggles
Prob not the best car I’ve owned (yet) but has good power which I enjoy. Now I need to use the paddles more.

CarPlay still seems to be a work in progress for VW. It has good days and bad days.
My R is a manual with no DAP - essentially what VW now sell as the Grid car (except I beat them to it 2 years ago). I felt that the DSG-equipped car was soulless and uninteresting to drive. The manual brings that back but VW have clearly optimised the car around DSG so having a manual causes other operational niggles instead!
I think that I will end up with a DSG-equipped MK 8 for the daily and something a lot more basic for fun!

I find the new 7 speed DSG really usable, get Stage 1 or a JB4 nothing souless or uninteresting in this combo. I think the base R has such a refined and competent chassis that yes it can feel dull but use it's capability to the fullest and it's anything but boring.
I posted this review in the Golf R thread worth a look if you haven't seen it.

Yeah, I hear you but I just don’t connect with it like I should. It was the same in the GTI too (I drove manual and DSG back-to-back in both cars). I get in them and it feels too ‘playstation’.
I also drove a 7.5R a couple of weeks ago at the VW Drive day and the new ‘box is very good but I still didn’t connect and it still does the double-shift thing (maybe practise would get around it).
I think I can see me switching to a fully manual car (Caterham) for the complete drive experience and a DSG GTI or R for my daily (perhaps).

The Mrs car arrived after long last! Lapiz blue hatch with roof.
During the handover I noticed heaps of light swirls and a few scratches, still inside the dealership at this stage.
We went for a drive and I immediatley hear a rotational noise so after 6 corners or so we were into the service department. Over the following week, the right rear bearing and rotor were replaced. Not happy it got through pre-delivery like that.
Looking at the car in daylight, the swirls and scratches are a real dogs breakfast. Dealer is claimfing it's within range of acceptable or some other weasel words.
I love driving the car, the mrs is very happy but I'm saddened by the amount of swirls, holograms and scracthes in the paint.
Can a few of you wise souls have a quick look at the 4 second or so vid that I linked above?
The car is a bit dusty but the holograms are just an example of what's present. The first time you look at the vid, it probably won't be in high res or full screen. There are even a few scracthes around the sun's reflection in the last few frames.
Quality of the sill protection and carbon vynil print is outstanding and will not disappoint.

Go test drive some Porsches if you really like to drive. These are great for souped up budget hatch backs, but they're no sports car to drive. Engine's in the wrong end for starters.

Haha. If only...
3 kids, sports kit and musical instruments demand otherwise.
Anyway, my point was about the Golf and DSG vs Manual and what it does to the experience in it. Also why I think the best solution is to have a different car for different purposes.
