People have different motivations for the purchase. Having a MK6 R I assumed I would move into the MK7 R, however after a couple of test drives of both Gti and R I found the MK7 R too loud, there is a very intrusive exhaust note in the cabin the entire time. I also preferred the softer ride in the Gti, maybe I'm getting old (there is no maybe about it). However I couldn't bring myself to get either of them in MY15 form as the screen was just too tiny and low resolution, when they first came out I looked into upgrading it to the 8" Discover Pro however it was not possible at the time (I believe it can be done now).

Now there is a Gti with a decent screen and it comes with the added bonus of xenon's, keyless entry and airplay. I will only be purchasing it if I can get a decent deal (I managed $5000 off list price on the MK6 R one week after launch), it does involve ringing every dealer in NSW and hanging in there until one gets desperate enough for the sale. Yes the deal won't be as good as what I'd get on an MY15, but I place some value on xenon's, better screen, keyless entry, airplay and better resale value selling an MY16.

Are you sure it's the exhaust note? I think you will find that noise is from the soundaktor, which may have been operating at its loudest if the "Engine" setting was set to "Sport" or the "Driving Mode" set to "Race". In "Eco" mode, it's far less intrusive. Either way, the soundaktor can be eliminated partially or completely via VCDS or phyisically disconnected.

Interested in this too - I've asked dealers but they won't know anything until they get the info you're asking for here.

Hoping the unit in the glove box doesn't need to be changed as a service bloke reckons they cost a few grand on their own (so excluding the costs for the head unit etc...)...

I think if you want CarPlay and smooth scrolling the glovebox unit will have to be swapped. That's the brains of the thing

Best I could get was $51800 on an MY16 GTI with DSG, DAP, Leather, Sunroof & Metallic paint. This is a $4000-$5000 discount off full price depending on how you calculate it. Delivery in Mid-August.

A few videos of the new 6.5-inch Composition Media high-resolution touch screen that most MY16 VW's will feature as standard.

3 videos, 2 from Canada and 1 from Italy show off the higher screen resolution, better responsiveness, faster, Apple Car Play, Android Auto and MirrorLink.

                    1. Canada - MIB II - Apple Carplay (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sh45sBn9yCI)
                    2. Canada - MIB II - 2016 Canadian Golf R (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4djaChmYd0)
                    3. Italy - Car Play, Android Auto & Mirror Link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9JJUJO11Lw)

My Italian is a little rusty, but you can select subtitles which are translated to English on YouTube if you want and at least you get a pretty good look at how responsive the screen is. It's the best Car Play, Android Auto and MirrorLink systems I have seen in terms of responsiveness.

Glad I cancelled my Golf R MY15.5 (which I was meant to pick up next week) for a MY16. The 5.8" screen would have bothered me a lot knowing this screen is only months away!

So it seems as if 3 units may need to be changed from the MY15 systems - the screen, processor (in glove box) & the USB connection box?

I've also heard of the 8" screen becoming available later this year, so will hope that it's compatible with the Golf & will be as defined/responsive as the 6.5" screen

The Italian vid says that some units will have their own SIM card for wifi hotspot functionality. Not that i'd need an extra monthly expense for SIM/data - just happy to use the data from the phone.

Man, we MY15 buyers got shafted BIG TIME.........................

How do you cancel (without penalty?) an order that you are meant to pick up next week? It couldn't possibly have been a custom build. Did you then place an order for an MY16 model with a similar equipment level? Was there a difference in purchase price?

It was a custom order I made back in March (yes, it has been forever), but I wanted the latest tech on the R which was the soonest I could have gotten the configuration I wanted with Blind Spot assist on the MK7 R.

When I was making the order I made a really strong point about there being 0% chance of the screen changing in the MY16 (I specifically asked at least 20 times). So after all I am the customer and in essence (even though the guy I was dealing with had no idea to be fair) I was lied to and put money down on a car, which if I wanted to get technical I could work my way out of that initial contract. Didn't have to get legal though, the guys at VW were good about it.

In short though, I asked to transfer to a MY16 and I released my MY15.5 R model so the dealer could sell it and they put my name against a MY16 R which has yet to be built.

Price itself hasn't been set in stone since VW Australia haven't released any (to my knowledge). All I know though is I won't be paying anymore than my initial contract because my quote was on a brand new Golf R (at the time) and now that Leather is standard I will bargain for little more off.

                            Sorry to deviate slightly..

Wife looking to upgrade her polo to possibly a Golf Wagon.. we test drove it at VW Camberwell (VIC) today.. we didn't really negotiate or talk about pricing today as we had to rush off suddenly but sales person quoted 92TSI Comfortline MY16 DSG for $33,700 driveaway.

How much do you think we'd be able to push it down to? We're planning on trading the Polo in (they valued it at $10k - can you actually negotiate for a better value?) for it.

Is it worth checking another dealer out to get a better pricing?

I think you are one very fortunate customer, as no matter what the sales guy says or doesn't say, haven't you entered into a legally binding contract to purchase the car with the specifications/options listed? Given the dealer will most likely not sell your custom build order for what you paid, I would think the leather inclusion savings on the MY16 model will not be passed onto you. If they are offered in part, you will be even luckier.

A salesman can't lie to you to acquire a sale, so I had that going for me if it did come to that. Although, if anyone here is looking to move to a MY16, for gods sake stay civil and don't pull out the legal lines. Play it cool and explain why you want to change and say please. Kindness goes a long way.

As for the dealer reselling the fully option Golf R MK7 MY15.5 in White, it won't be difficult. Not everyone cares about the latest tech and depending on the customer they might even sell it for more. They only wanted a $1K deposit because it's such a highly sought after car. Who's even saying I had a good price to start off with! hahaha

The leather won't add a full non-negotiable $3K to the total price (which is what it use to cost). If anything (because of economies of scales on the leather option being standard) I should be able to work the cost of the total car lower theoretically. End of the day, all I know is I am not going to pay more than I had been originally quoted. Especially as other Golf's. and Polo's are having their cost slashed with more extras as standard!

p.s. Mickey1, if that is your R in your avatar I bloody love it. One fine looking vehicle!
