  • SD Card(s) not reading

2015 Golf TDI s model. When I try to use a SD card absolutely nothing happens. No errors, no reading, like I have put nothing in the SD card spot directly below the CD player in the glove box. On all the radio menus the SD card is dimmed as if nothing is in there. I have tried 4 different brands and sizes of SD cards, different formatting options, different files, still nothing. The iphone cable works fine, so does bluetooth and the CD player. No error codes either with VCDS. I have tried complete resets of everything but no luck. Any thoughts before VW gets my car again? My car only has 1 SD card spot...

Does your car not have two SD card slots - one for the satnav maps and the other for media? My map SD card was originally in the #1 slot from the dealer and worked with the satnav, but I've since swapped this to slot#2 as per the user manual. My SD card for media seemed to work fine in either slot, so if you have both try swapping them around and check if the card can be read. Also, have your SD cards been formatted as FAT32?

Are you formatting the SD cards on a Mac or a PC? From memory, a few people on other threads had issues when formatting SD cards on MACs. Also what capacity SD cards are you using? I had issues with cards larger then 2GB in my previous VW R36 Passat (fixed with a firmware update), but I'm not sure if there is a limitation on SD cards with the mk7 entertainment unit. I'm using both 16GB and 32GB SD cards in my MY15 Golf R without any issues.

Its on a PC... card sizes are 2 x 4gb, a 512mb, and a 32 gb. The owners manual says it can do all of those no issues.

I tried more formatting attempts and just about everything else. Looks like it's a trip to the dealer Always seems to happen on a weekend too. Wonder if there is something in VCDS that can "turn on" that port like the bluetooth has an enable'disable function?

Ben; You probably already know that the unit inside the glovebox is called J794 by VW and its located at hex address 5F (Information Electr.). Unfortunately, your auto-scans will confirm that this control module (and the CAN Gateway module @ Hex address 19) as yet does not have a label file from Ross Tech. This means from a vcds perspective that there is little information about what the coding values in the control module actually does- alas. So I don't beleive that VCDS will help in this instance.

There is however a good understanding of what the adaptation channels do in address 5F and there are lots of copies of the adaptation maps for this module on the net. I've looked through the full list of adaptation channels in my 5F control module and i can find no reference to either of the two card slots - sorry.

It sounds like you know what you are doing and that you have done everything correctly. So assuming that you have the SD card switch on 'lock' when you put it in the slot and assuming that when you press Media and Source, the SD card 1 symbol is greyed and assuming that you have released the SD card correctly using the menu in the infortainment system, then I agree with "Hillbilly" that a visit to the "stealer" is required. Good luck and please let us know what the outcome is (answers to these unusual problems can be very educational)

DV52, thanks for the very informative post. The last thing I have to try is to change back the only adaption changes I made on the 5F module (believe it was driving school enabling). In answer to your statement about ejecting the cards, I can't even do that because it is greyed out. I'm not sure I've tried locking the cards to test, so I'll give that a try too. I'll post back with the results.

Ben, I really don't see how the Driving School Mode tweak would affect your SD card slot behaviour. I have DSM enabled on my car and my SD slots work OK. Also, the "lock" mechanism on the SD card is more of a precaution, rather than an absolute must-have to work in the slot.

Well I think its more of a piece of mind for me, plus with my luck the dealer would say something about that and how it screwed up the SD card slot. It's an easy 30 second fix just to play it safe. I'm quite certain I have a bad SD card reader in my car. Guess we will see tomorrow.

Got the car back from the dealer, no faults found in the infotainment module, but after still not getting the card spot to work they said they will replace the module under warranty for free. They ordered the part and I'm supposed to go back on Saturday to get it installed. I did uninstall the driving school mode just to see, but made no difference. I kept it off simply because the only thing different in that mode compared to start up is the turn signal indication. I'll probably just leave it disabled. Anyway, I'll report back when it's installed and fixed. Thanks for the help.

Ben: You are messin' with my brain big-time!! You are going to have to explain this to me in single syllable words- please. "no faults found in the infotainment module, but..........still not getting the card slot to work"? Then the dealer makes a warranty claim to VW Australia?

Sorry, but I just get mad with dealers that say one thing to their customer but then contradict the statement to VW Australia!

Let me clarify...no faults because there were communication issues with the infotainment module. No stored codes because it's not communicating properly...will know more tomorrow when they swap it out. If the swap fixes I'll be happy and they guessed correctly.

Well this sucks... They replaced the infotainment module... The SD card port works now, but no bluetooth, phone stuff, MDI function, or voice control. The dealer couldn't figure out why and said Ill just have to come back when they can call their help line and try to find out! I'm trying very hard to remain patient, but F***! Any help or something I could do with VCDS? The old module number was 5G0 035 844 and has been superseded by 5G0 035 878 A. They installed the later one. Help please!
