  • Golf R Wheel options 20" ?

    Hi All,

Am awaiting delivery of my new R in Lapiz Blue. The one part of the car I am not really keen on are the 19" Cadiz wheels. While I don't think they are horrid I want the wheels to be my first mod.

I am thinking of going slightly larger to 20" with a set of OZ Racing Ultraleggera in matt graphite silver shown here Wheel Selector - Match Wheels & Rims to Your Car or Vehicle

Wondering on peoples thoughts on how much this will affect ride quality and if there are any other suggestions for 20" wheels that will fit i.e. 5x112 bolt pattern and an offset of 47 degrees (+/- 5 degrees)?

    Cheers

Yes you could put 20's on but most reviewers are already saying the ride is fairly firm with the 19's to start with.

Also you'd be into 30 profile rubber to keep the rolling diameter the same. So you'd want to check what tyre availability is like in 235/30R20(?) also if you wanted to head down that path.

You will have limited tyre choices in this size.

If the car is driven on smooth perfect roads 90% of the time, 20" should be fine.

But if u drive on parramatta rd from strathfield to parramatta everyday, i would rather stay or even go with 235 40 18 rubber on 18" wheels.

20"s are too big - they will look silly and the ride will be too harsh.

Thanks for the responses. The car will only really be a weekender and the roads are pretty good here in VIC..in general. Tigger you are right about tyre choices, they are limited but in the past I have found that most places are happy to order in what I have needed in the past.
Taking an R for a drive tomorrow so will really test out how firm the ride is. The 20's would be primarily for aesthetics. Having said that there seem to be a whole heap more 19" options!

Also, the new mk7 R seems to have more fender space to fit 19x8.5 offset +45

Wheels probably won't be an issue but tyres in 235/30/20 only have an 88 load rating. The standard tyres are 91. Check the tyre placard on the car when you test drive it. I doubt there will be an 88 option on it. I personally wouldn't go down the inferior load rating route but each to their own. Just make sure you know what the insurance implications are. The tyre salesman won't care as it's not his problem if your tyre blows out. For some reason they're allowed to sell all sorts of non compliant tyre/wheel combos with no legal ramifications on them.

Rightio - Looks like I'm being swayed back to 19's. Does anyone know what the wheel weight of the stock Cadiz's is? I haven't been able to find it anywhere?

Should be at least 13kg each.

Just found a German site selling the Cadiz 19"'. Shipping weight 40kg - Looks like 10kg each! Lighter than I thought

Would be interesting to see what they are. Someone on the UK S3 forum bought a set of the 19" rotors that the S3 sedan comes with as standard. They weighed 9.65kg each! He said they were 2kg lighter than the standard 18s his car came with, and Audi spruiks them as light weight.

I'm going to check with the dealer what my 19" V spoke options weigh. If it's 13kg each I'll be having the rotors thank you.

These are the light weight rotors:

These are the V spokes: I know it's an RS4 but I can't find an S3 sedan with them.

Both of these would be good options on the Golf R. The V spokes are similar to the Pretoria's?

The Cadiz will definitely be a lot more than that - at least the 13kg nat225 suggested. The German site that is selling the wheels lists every package as 40kg, I think that's just so that they use a standard freight charge for all packages.
