  • Broken Parcel Shelf Hooks :frown:

Hi all, I had an incident recently where I accidentally broke the parcel shelf hook that holds up the parcel shelf string. Interesting enough it wasn't because I put an heavy item on top of the shelf but because I had a large Esky in the boot which prevented the shelf from swiveling and resulting in the weight of the boot door cracking off the shelf hook Not a happy camper, such a novice mistake from a first time hatch owner.

What I'd like to ask is anyone experienced this with the MK7 and what have they done to fix the part ? I've looked at Ebay for the part but because unlike the MK4 and before the part is molded into the trim of the boot door and looks like VWA would take me to the cleaners in parts and labor to install. Any suggestions ?

Ouch!! Yes I agree that the cost of a replacement part from your friendly VW agent would almost certainly be close to the annual budget of a small African nation!! I've had a look at the shelf hook on my mk7 and I was surprised at the weight of the parcel shelf that the hook needs to support.

As for your question, my suggestion is that the easiest fix would be to simply find a self tapping screw with a thread diameter that is a little oversize for the diameter of the hole that's left in the bit that protrudes from the trim. The object of the fix is for the head of the screw to stop the cord from slipping off the protrusion that has been left on the trim. With the screw inserted, the shelf chord would sit on the protrusion (rather than sit on the bit that you have broken-off). Hope this makes sense.

Had the same problem on my mk6, I also used a small self tapping screw and painted it with black plastic dip to blend in with the trim.
Research for an OEM replacement came up with replacing the whole panel, the parts guy suggested looking for a wreaked part but that would be hit and miss with the condition of the whole panel.
My hook snapped of when the kids took the shopping out of the car, a bag of drinks knocked it and snap.

I had the same thing happen in my Mk6 too - I just used a self tapping screw, but didn't think of painting it, would have been a good idea to make it blend in.

I actually had it happen to both sides, so I reckon it's a bit of a design flaw. Hopefully doesn't happen to my Mk7

Had the same issue with a 2006 Polo Match, and now with our 2010 118TSI.
Fixed using a small plastic pin (see photo): drilled out a small hole into the trim where the broken hook was, and inserted the shortened pin, secured with super glue.
Trouble is, I don't know where the pins come from... I had 3 of them is the shed, and the last one might come handy in the 2014 Confortline we are waiting for!!
Perhaps someone knows where to find those and where they are normally used for...
            Cheers.

Edit: Just remembered... they are used when making your own window fly-screens. They go through the aluminium profile and into a hole in the timber reveal, to secure the screen. Cheers.
