I've noticed a Driving Mode setting in my MY16 GTI which allows the 'Interior Engine Sound' to be set to Normal/Sport/Eco.

I'm not sure I noticed it in the MIB I system I had earlier & wondering if it's new to MIB II?

If so, it's a bonus tweak for those who don't want to hear the fake engine noise from the Soundaktor.

Ralfi - in Eco mode is the soundaktor completely off? Would be great if you could share your observations on sound differences between normal/sport/Eco.

That is definitely a new option! Never seen that on any previous (MIB I) models. Bonus Nifty little option, definitely looking forward to that one when I get mine!

Side note: That screen resolution looks fantastic in the pictures! So much crisper.

I finally got around to disconnecting mine. If anyone has difficulty accessing the plug, after removing the rubber strip and 3 clips, there is a further step which improves access.

There is a black metal plate at the top of the firewall that can be removed too. Anyone who had a Mk 6 will know what I mean. Remove the 4 big disc screws holding the insulation onto the front of the firewall. Then remove the nut holding the plate down at either end near the strut tops. The whole thing will come up and out giving very easy access to the Soundaktor. Probably most useful if you want to reconnect the plug or get at the wiring easily to put a switch in it. I may get around to that eventually.

If you physically disconnect the wires to the Structure Borne Sound control unit, won't you get an error message reported on the car's diagnostic (i.e. the autoscan report in VCDS and/or the error report in the dealer's ODIS system)? I don't have one of these units in my mk7, so I can't test it.

My second question is: rather than removing the wires from the control unit, would it be preferable to physically disconnect the two wires to the vibrating mechanism (it's really not a speaker) that connects to the front windshield? My hunch (again I can't prove it because I don't have a soundaktor) is that this might (?) not produce an error message.

I did this on my MY16 R. I noticed the synthesised noise was reduced, but still there. It would be interesting to compare with a disconnected soundaktor if/when I get around to it.

I had my soundaktor disconnected during my last service in readiness for an after market exhaust. The R was just so quiet without the soundaktor, too quiet for a performance vehicle IMHO.

Hi Don, the two wires going into the vibrating thing were what I removed. No faults on the dash but I don't have a scanner. When I get it serviced, in a month or two, I will get them to connect it again and turn it down a bit. They can clear any error codes. I might get the stereo upgrade too while I'm at it.
