The regular auto headlights just dip to low beam when there is a car in front of you, the "intelligent high beam with masking" stays on high beam but masks out the portion of the beam that would shine on the other car, so you get a gap in the beam but still can see everything else to either side the other car. In the youtube clips I've seen it looks quite useful in still being able to see 'roos or wombats on the roadside verges when there is a car in front of you.

When my R wagon arrives (in a few months) I guess I'll be able to answer my own questions about these fancy new headlights.

    • I could be wrong but I doubt the R will have them fitted. They are a different headlight to the normal LEDS.

I'm hoping mine will have the fancy headlights. When I checked on vincoderz.com for my Wolfsburg VIN it shows both "Masked High Beam" and "LED headlamps with variable light distribution".

          • Does anyone recognise these chinese LED headlights? They came with my car purchased 2nd hand so I don't know the brand and there are no markings I can see.

I have problems with at least one of the Xenons not working 50% of the time. I replaced the ballast without any success. I want to replace the bulbs before replacing the lights all together and it seems I would need to remove the whole unit to get to the bulbs. I want to figure out what type of bulb I need so I only have to do it once.

            Thanks

            • I've just replaced the standard low beam H7 halogen globes in my new 7.5 Trendline with these: OSRAM Night Breaker Unlimited H7 (Twin) | PowerBulbs based on this test: Best car headlight bulbs: group test | Auto Express

Very pleased with the results - noticeably brighter with better throw.

I find the std high beam set-up to be fine (albeit a tad yellow), so will stick for those for the time being.

              • My Golf ALLTRACK have the Bi-Xenon light package,
and the high beam is extremely bad, because there is no separate lamp for the high beam.
The light output of a single xenon lamp is not enough during darkness.

                • prob dumb question, but is there a way to do the headlights on a 2012 jetta 147tsi Highline
have had the car since brand new, and love the car, just hate the crappy halogen lights

i just picked up my rline tig a month ago (the wifes car / family car) and the lights are so bloody good

I don't know anything about the lights on the Golf so if this suggestion does not apply just ignore it. On my Skoda Superb the inner light had a low watt H1 bulb in them which did not do much at all. I put 125 watt H1's in the inners and that woke the lights up, they were better than the LED's in my new Tiguan by a fair bit.

Well, some months later and I am indeed answering my own question. Having just done a short highway drive at night with lots of other cars around I can confirm that my 7.5 R definitely has the fancy headlights that dip the part of the Hi beam that is pointing towards another car. It seems to have 4 sections, and each section is individually controlled so that I could still see lots of the left hand side road verge, even when behind another car with the other 3 segments dipped. It does seem to dip early enough to avoid blinding other drivers.

I wouldn't rate the full hi beam (all 4 segments on Hi) as being spectacularly bright and long throwing, but seemed acceptable on the short drive I had. You'd need to take a drive in the country without many other cars around to get a better idea.

                        • Yeah. Coming from an FG Falcon which may have the largest brightest factory reflectors on the planet plus Nightbreakers the MK7.5 high beams aren't the greatest for country driving, but the high beam assist works and works well in built up areas. I'm on mid north coast NSW with a new Motorway on either side, so I'm set. Can always chuck the fogs on for a bit more ground and side lights I guess.
I did the coding to keep auto highs on between start and stop though.

It is a little strange seeing my car 'looking' all over the road though, but so far no one has flashed me.

                          • The first time the cornering beams camet on I was wondering what was happening, now I just like it.

I also enjoy the calibration "dance" the different segments of headlight beams do when I switch the engine on - it amuses me for some reason With auto lights set to on I see it every time in my garage.

Even though they may appear to give more light, the vision experts say that fog lights in good conditions actually reduce your ability to see further out, something to do with the pool of bright light directly in front of the car making it more difficult to see things in the less well illuminated area at the fringe of your main headlights.

My biggest objection to fog lights is so many are very badly designed or installed or aimed so they end up dazzling other drivers. Recent Commodores seem to be one of the worst offenders in my experience.

Yeah, I love the dance. Especially the last part where the beam spreads and then rejoins. It's the little touches like that I've always enjoyed in VW.

The fog lights reducing visibility makes perfect sense. It's the reason you should dim the instrument panel (in fact that might be my problem lol!)

The fogs in my FG were blinding, I'd get flashed in all but the thickest fog, so I removed them and put Osram DRL/Fog combo lights in. Improved visibility to other drives in the day, and I still had fog lights when I needed them once every 2-3 years.

                              • Had a run last night with the dynamic light assist. Probably should have read that section of the manual before hand, rather than trying to figure it out on a back road, in the dark, at 100 kph, with regular oncoming traffic? I think the biggest benefit is that it illuminates the edge of the road better than non-adaptive systems do.
