Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I read recently that this is an ADR requirement and is the case for all vehicles fitted with an automatic parking brake in Australia. If so, then they all are. It's certainly the case for the Audi S3.

    • Hey guys anyone's got a recommendation for a wheel repairer around Sydney (North Shore preferable)?

Missus took the car out last week and curbed it...... I can't bear looking at it every time I walk to the car.

Will post a picture of it when I get back.

I stand corrected. I was sure i couldn't turn it on when parking unless i was touching the brake...but
Just tried it at crawling speeds and its really violent, would hate for it to happen in full motion.

Imagine what it was like at 100. I thought the back end of the car had been pulled off. No old style hand brake can be as effective as that. Instant total lock up.

          • So my wife's GTI has developed a couple of issues.

Coolant in header tank has turned a brownie colour with a contamination on the surface. Car is not overheating, oil on dip stick is still fine, no condensation under oil cap.

Dealer said it will be fine to keep driving because it's not overheating.

Other issue is a suspension clunk in front right when turning into left hand driveways and gutters. Must be a knowing issue because workshop foremen diagnosed it as a FR lower control arm bush just from my description.

So they have already ordered the parts.

Car goes in next week to get fixed.

              Hi Brendan,
Have you had the clunking fixed yet? Only reason I ask is I've got a GTI (almost identical to yours) and have been trying to get the clunking fixed for the last 6 months, I've had it at VW Artarmon 3 times and still no joy. The last thing they did was replace the strut top mount baring, but no good. I've got it back in there on the 9th December to try again.
They did say that the managers car has started making the same noise as mine is too, so hopefully this will help get it fixed.

              Cheers
              Chris

Ok, looking forward to hearing what work was done and if it's fixed. Fingers crossed for you.

Well I have no good news to report. They replaced the RH lower control arm bush but made no difference. However they did noticed the bush was loose in arm. The machining is outside the allowable tolerance.

So they have ordered a new RH lower control arm.

They have no idea about the coolant changing colour and VW Aus are waiting for Germany to instruct them.

Sorry to hear that mate, hope the new control arm works. I've got my going in for service in a couple weeks, so hope they get it sorted.
                      Cheers

I hope it's all fixed next time it goes in. I hate going to dealership. My Amarok is in next week for warranty too. They'll be glade to see me gone for awhile.

Has your service team said anything about the RH lower control arm? It makes sense what my guys are saying about the arm that's making the noise.

No they haven't mentioned the RH lower control arm, the knocking sounds like its a little higher, which was why we thought it was top mount.
Will definitely get them to look at the control arm too.
They said that mine is the first that they have dealt with that has the knocking noise and that the service managers GTI has also started making the same noise.
I hear the noise most when I'm driving down a multi level carpark ramp where there is turning and change in angle of the road, seems to affect it the most.

                              • Do you think it's possible to find a 2014 GTI for 40k or less? I'd be perfectly happy with the base GTI (with tartan seats, no bi-xenons, etc.)
