Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Correct, the KW does interface nicely. Obviously a costly set up, however in theory should provide for a more comfortable ride which these days I rate highly.

Splashalot, if you are just changing springs then this doesn't impact the ability to change the damper settings, although it will generally be a lot firmer in even comfort, and in the longer term can shorten the life of the dampers overall.

I've got used to the 'plush' ride of the Mk7, and am loathe to mess with it, but I also am not a fan of the wheel arch gap particularly with my OZ rims - it's a compromise either way.

    • Just got the tune done, and boy am I smiling. first gear... okay power has a little bit increased, second gear comes in.... my head banged the headrest. I wasn't expecting it to kick in like that. But I noticed there is a lot of wheelspins, even on the 2nd gear, time to learn how to feather the throttle.

It is actually, quite scary, before you know it the dial showed that I need to slow down ... Just want the weekend to come now so I can test it out on some not so metro area.

You really need AWD to harness all that extra grunt. The R stands to benefit more, though turbo issues from early Euro models will make that decision here interesting for sceptics.

I agree with you, AWD would capture all the power down to the road. But I grew up in a racing family, and what my dad always has said to my mum was... What's the fun in driving a car that isn't trying to kill you

              • I'm glad you are enjoying it. It's very tempting to push the car all the time because it just wants to go hard . The wheel spin is a small concern even running 235's just try not to bury your foot in second . Takes a little while to adjust to the lift in torque but it's fun learning !

                    • I'm new to the VW fold, should be enjoying the new car smell of my GTI PP within the next couple of weeks.

Been catching up through this thread over the past week, while working up to the final decision for my new toy. It's been a long winded process, checking out lost of options and trying to balance out the value for money, fun factor, etc equations.

In reply to below, in case it's not too late, I took a V40 T5 R-Design for an extended test, but cut it short because I quickly figured out it wasn't what it's cracked up to be. Yes it's nice enough inside and quick off the mark. But, the it felt as connected to the road as a Fairmont I "piloted" years ago, and the rearward vision was atrocious.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I searched through the first 50 or so pages and I guess I gave up finding anything. I was under the impression that the pricing thread was just for the lower spec'ed golfs? Yeah I agree that the handling and performance isn't as good as the Golf R. However the 0-100 on the v40 is better than the GTI ( according to 'official stats') but year thats not a definition of performance. I think the interior on the v40 is much nicer as well, but once again thats subjective. The v40's automatic gearbox does suck.

                      aj55,

Do you mind if I ask how much you paid? and what specs you got?

                      cheers.

Couldn't agree more! Usually the first "test" drive is with the sales person, along their route, distracting you with their pitch about the car you've just told them you've already researched. Part of the price you pay to get the relationship under way, if new. Then I usually book in for an afternoon for the real test drive, on my own, along roads I know. Typically they just want a copy of your license and the keys to you car, sometimes sign an insurance excess form. If they don't want to play, then neither will I.

Hey wasabiz, can you confirm 0-100 times for us? The APR times seem a little optimistic - 7.24 to 5.86.

Also did you get it on the dyno? If so, what numbers did you get? Again APR claim 235kw/516nm - seems a lot for a tune.

I'm afraid I can't give you that right now. I will though post my 1/4 mile time next week.

As for Dyno, those figure are on the flywheel, not on the wheel. Someone else did it and achieved quite a high number on 91 AKI octane which is roughly the same as our 95 RON

This figure has been SAE corrected on the 91 AKI octane map. 286 whp and 460nm tq
The figures on the spec sheet of a stock GTI were on the flywheel, 220/230 hp will probably equate to 180-190 whp.

Where does APR claim the 0-100 times? What stock GTI is running 7.24?

They do claim 1.094s reduction in quarter mile times although no actual time has been quoted and it is ex USA testing.

Given the power outputs of other tuners at the fly I feel pretty confident APR aren't just tossing around figures.

Look forward to your run next week though wasabiz.

APR - High Performance Development for Audi, VW and Porsche Vehicles.

They quote a US spec GTI - 0-100 could have been done up in the mountains.
