Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

If you have as trouble free run with your Golf as you did with your Accord then you'll be doing very well. The biggest risk in the Accord is probably dozing off and running off the road.. no chance of that in your GTI as you'll be having too much fun.

DSG and engine issues are a lot rarer in the GTIs though as they were always tougher/tried and tested units.

I notice consecutive red GTI purchases here as well - there goes my theory that they'd be a bit rarer this time around.

    • GTI Performance

      Hey
Looking at getting a Performance over the R but quite torn...
What's the best prices people have managed to get their Performance for?

      • The reliability issues where mainly focused around the 118tsi twin charger and 7 speed dry clutch dsg.
Neither are in the performance golfs. And the have since dropped the 118tsi and (apparently) fixed the 7 speed dsg. The engine/gearbox combo in the GTI/R is pretty strong.

          What he said.
The DSG issue is or was only for the 7 Speed versions. Not the 6 speed version in the GTI.
My mk6 was trouble free, very reliable. Just sold it as my mk7 is being picked up tomorrow morning

I don't think you could say you truly owned a Mk6 GTI unless you had a water pump go though?!

I also got a mechatronics done on the house but can't say it made much difference.

I did tune it though cause I had confidence in the motor. I think Guy's 570hp Golf kinda proves that!

Just thought you'd mention it? Damn you.

And to be more specific - the DQ200 7 speeder though *touch wood* my wife's 77TSI has not acted up.

The DQ500 7 speeder used in the Tiguan (and Amarok IIRC) is also plenty robust.

I have always wondered why they don't use the DQ500 with the Golf R,

              • Amarok don't use a DSG. They use a ZF 8 speed auto which is a very nice shifting box(test drove one yesterday).

                • The ZFs are very good boxes.

The DSGs are suitable in performance applications, and are useful for fuel efficiency (although sometimes at the cost of longevity of the box), but gotta wonder whether perhaps the ZF should be used in other applications.

                  • Haha yes our accord is a bit of a snooze to drive. I've missed having a sporty drive and the gti seems perfect for my weekend zips and a comfy drive for the wife and kid.

A little surprised to hear that electrical bits are the common problem. I would have expected the go fast parts to be the stuff that break. Dsg, engine & turbo. But to be fair our accord went 7 yrs before having to replace the alternator. So it wasn't all trouble free motoring from a Japanese brand (and build) either.

                    • Well i never had any issues so maybe i was lucky

Anyway pickled up my GTI this morning and the dealer said they can now fit the led rear tail lights. All standard factory ones that they have on the GTI PP and R.
So he is going to give it cost price for me, waiting on a cost.

Is it worth buying a demo just to save a bit extra when the exact same one but brand new is also available?

If everyone drives like me during a testdrive, then no, I don't think its worth it.

                              • i work with a few guys who used to sell in dealerships, apparently they very rarely get warranty issues with demonstrators. The theory is that they're "run in" like they're stolen and thus they're well set up for a good life. The cars that are babied are apparently the problem.
