Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Buying a car with no options is clearly the best financial choice, not only at purchase time but also at trade in time as I'm finding out! I think I had every option except sat nav, dynaudio and I'm now I'm being offered $20,000 for trade in at Merc dealer. I've done 59,000kms and is excellent condition. When I traded the Mk 5 GTI for the current car VW gave me 25,000 and it had 67,000kms on it and only options were sunroof and leather. Redbook does say that the trade in price for 45-75,000kms, 2010 GTI is 19,000 to 22,000.
Has all of the, generally unjustified, negative press affected VW depreciation rates?
I'm going to VW today to see what sort of deal they'd offer me on a new one. At the end of the day the change over figure is the bottom line.

Used car market in general has taken a huge hit over the last 12 months. The number of cars for sale just on carsales has increased by 40000 cars in the last year and VW's cock up over the last 6 months hasn't helped a lot either. thought of doing private sale?

      • I agree with the review, namely that 18" wheels, satellite navigation and adaptive dampers should have been options. For me, that stuff is unncessary and merely serves to drive up the cost of ownership, which lessens the likelihood of me purchasing. All I really want is a no-frills 3 door for banging around the suburbs on my daily commute, although I'd settle for 5 doors seeing there is currently no other option.

Hope you are reading this VW - sub $40k pricing would be easily achievable if you deleted that stuff, which makes it more attractive to buyers.....

I think the current proposition is very attractive to the average motorist, who would prefer their cars to come with as much toys and gadgets as they can. For instance, look at how the Performance Pack is packaged for the Australian market (PP + fancy lights, bigger wheels & tyres, different seats & self-shifting gearbox) compared to the European or UK market (just PP).

I think VGA have cornered their intended consumer base well.

          • Well considering that all RHD golfs come from the same place WHY can we not get the same options as Britain??

            • Confirmed NO sunroof possible on the PP GTI as per my dealer reading his bulletin. Same STUPID thing as the Pirelli edition. Who knows whether it's due to the 19 inch silly wheels. They said that swapping back to 18's was not possible either. Oh well, no sunroof, no option to go back to 18's as they have in THE REST OF THE WORLD, no manual. FAIL FAIL FAIL VW. Price would be close to $54,000 for PP with cloth seats and driver assistance pack. If I option up a manual GTI with roof, xenon and driver assistance pack and leather it's more expensive than a PP GTI! And to add insult the only cars coming in the first batch have no options fitted. Why the hell would they do that
There are PLENTY of us who have been waiting for months and would take an optioned car over waiting 6 months. It's just that I happen to want options and they aren't even bringing them over early. I'm looking at waiting 5 months. The Mercedes A250 (free servicing corporate deal) available in 4 weeks is looking pretty good.

The PP doesn't have a roof, assistance pack or leather. So why option a plain GTI with those then compare it with a PP?

May be because you can option those options on the performance pack

                    • I compare it to the PP because it's meant to be the top of the range but stupid VW don't allow it to be optioned up with a sunroof for god's sake. And why can't I say i want 18 inch wheels on it when it comes with 18's in Europe. So they can charge $4-5,000 more for it instead of being very reasonably priced at only about $1500 more in other markets. Oh but it has 19inch bling sodding ugly alloys for free!
They are being very clever because if you want some options in a manual car then you're going to be paying more for it than the top of the range model.
Pologti18t you've once again shown you're an aggressive rude VW employee.

I went and see GTI7 and A250 back to back. Really no brainer for me. A250 looks hot and very well priced. When I start adding things to GTI, it comes close to A250. And the wait time I was told is the same for both, 6 months. GTI7 might be a better drive but A250 excels everywhere. The roof on A250 is huge when compared to GTI. Also no Dynaudio option, I like quality sound in car. With command in A250, you get excellent HK system. Seriously, I think GTI is not priced well. Just my opinion, don't shoot me.

You can't option any golf with a sunroof if you have the 19 inch wheel option.

HOw am I being rude? Just pointing out logic.

The PP isn't really the top of the range. The Golf R takes that mantle. VWA have bundled the dynamic curve bixenons (euro 355) , a bit alcantara trim (which is a 750 euro option in Germany), 19 inch mags (600 euro) and the PP option and created a pack. All added up it adds euro 4610 to a german golf GTI.
