        Ha ha!

"The S3 spec sheet shows outputs of 296bhp and 280lb ft in a car weighing 1395kg. That means 0-62mph is dealt with in 5.2sec, or 0.4sec less if you opt for the six-speed S-tronic twin-clutch gearbox (a £1480 option), while top speed is limited to 155mph. Allied to this Porsche 911 Carrera-rivalling pace is the revelation that both gearboxes achieve over 40mpg on the combined cycle."

        YAWN...oh

        • I wasn't mentioning the performance of the S3... it was this:

" But on a rougher road surface it quickly starts to feel out of its depth, the damping struggling to keep the body under control and a surprising amount of float developing."

Evo Nov has a test of the A45, S3, Focus ST, GTi/PP and MEgane RS265. Interesting results

Journos are so inconsistent. Henry Catchpole is good and I respect EVO reviews generally, but I don't buy the statement "the S3’s engine is a cracker... lag-free". Motor magazine (Georg Kacher, one of the world's most respected motoring journos) compared the S3, M135i and A45 AMG a couple of issues ago, and described the S3 as very laggy.

Of course it all comes down to what you're used to and consider to be acceptable. Just a pity that reviews really need to be taken with a grain of salt.

But Evo gave them this as the pro and cons:

              evo RATING

              Pro: Grip, quality, exhaust note

Con: A bit too safe a pair of hands

That "Con" is find for me, as for 5 days a week it will be the wife's car driving the kids to school!

              • British reviews tend to annoy me as they never seem to treat hot hatches as daily drivers and they almost always dedicate about a paragraph or two (or two minutes of a video) to moan about DSG gearboxes. I generally prefer German reviews, even if google does a terrible job translating.

                • Should also be noted that every man and their dog who is an "automotive journalist" gave rave reviews about the DSG and then turned on it when they announced the recall.

Also they all rave about the Toyobaru but from all accounts it is underperforming in stock form.

Only a certain section of the press turned on the DSG after the recall. most other still praise it for quick shift.

with the Toyobaru, they only rave about fun per dollar, handling and balance but never the performance or speed.

Other messages were that pricing start oct, their internal staff training on or around the 9th oct (?), and car availability 2nd half of Oct; before 1st Nov.

This line up with anyone else?
Yep totally lines up. Pricing on or around Oct 1. Dealer demo cars to arrive in the first week of October. Deliveries from Oct 10 if the car is in the first batch.

                      • Does look like a great car (sure it may not be as "fun" as the BMW but then pretty much nothing is). All the reviews I've read suggest the new S3 is a big improvement over the old one in the fun department. The engine sounds like a V5 according to some, and they all love the DSG fart/woomph between changes, and the interior quality is second to none in that segment. And in the UK the S3 is just ~3,000GBP more than the GTI. We might have to start a new S3 thread here somewhere.

I've been reading through this one in the meantime: 2013 Audi S3
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

I was surprised by how much that was optional on the S3 was standard in the UK spec GTI

                            • If it wasn't already official (given the spec sheet already released) the VWA Facebook update says the GTI will be exclusively a 5 door.
