Singlespeed: hmm.... I've had a tow bar on the golf almost since new. Mostly tow a trailer for domestic purposes. Regularly tow half meter of soil. Golf handles it no worries at all.
Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.

I used to tow a motorcycle trailer with two sport bikes on it with my Mk4 Golf TDI manual, it was a great vehicle in the hilly Eiffel region of Germany. The new Mk7 DSG feels fragile to me in comparison to the old Golf. I'm sure it would be fine.

        Fixed that for you

Guys this thread has been a stellar effort. Kudos to those of you who have persisted and been successful with your dealers. I advise you to become comfortable with the situation of you knowing more than the dealership.... It will happen often unless you hit an enthusiast who happens to work there!

How much would dealers likely charge for VCDS changes? I ask as I am contemplating purchasing the cheapest kit and using it for the changes I want. I intend to be doing other mods to the car for engine mapping etc as well so I'm investigating what capabilities I need.

I'm in Brisbane - If I go down this path I'd be happy to hep out others locally.

        • Hi Guys, just got a Golf R but dec2013 build with V1 maps . Will have to ask the dealer about V2 next week..

          • V1 and v2 maps are not interchangeable. V2 is not actually version 2 as such, just different software for newer model golfs. ( however it does appear to have more roads) A real software update is due out soon.

I agree with that. The message is, don't trust everything you read in the forums.

              • How old are the maps that come with the Golf7?

I know that we got maybe spoiled with TomTom and others, offering the map updates up to 4 times per year, but it doesn't mean that VW has to do the same. Maybe people who want to buy a new car should ask about the updates and how often they will be released before they make a decision to buy a car, if the up to date maps are that important to them.

I found that google maps are quite up to date, everytime my Navman or TomTom can't find a new street.

Nice thought, and I did ask but couldn't get a clear reply - but the dynamics of the car were more important to me than the sat nav, so I purchased anyway.

I'm afraid that's old news for me, like several months. VWA's "soon" seems to be quite a long time. Or do you have recent info?

The same for me I asked and was told its the latest software 0430 and maps 5G0919866G 0027 ROW 2014 but it has a 2013 load dated making it more than 6 months old. The traffic reports don't seem to integrate with the map when I push the traffic button I get a list of traffic incidents all over the state with no reference to my location. I thought the congestion was meant to be shown on the map?
Also voice control only mute's the sound no voice instructions. I have contacted the dealer in Mascot but it's been over a week and one email and 3 calls and not even a return call. I tried to speak with the sales person but was told he no longer works there and this is meant to be one of VW's biggest dealers. Worst car delivery I have have ever had !

                      • This must have changed because all the cars GTI, R & Scrocco except the one I bought had the voice control and I'm chasing them up as to why now.

I'd think the SD shortage would only be a problem for a short amount of time and shouldn't be ongoing in the months to come. I don't really like the idea of maps on an SD card - more chance of it disappearing.
I agree I tried to make a backup because I know how unreliable SD cards can be. I tried using a number of methods and none worked there is some kind of protection to prevent copping.

                            • Not many people realize but SD actually stands for Secure Digital. SD cards have some pretty advanced DRM copy protection available including protected data zones that can't be accessed. Its a rarely used feature on SD cards but I'm guessing VW is taking advantage of that fact (I don't think its been cracked).

Maybe you should try a smarter excuse to make a copy, like "in case I lose the original".

For more than a decade, I use SD cards a lot and never had one that failed.
