The Mk7 GTI is very busy (weird split lower grill thing and 20 button steering wheel control).
I also don't like the weird circle inner steering wheel shape at all!
Yep, the steering wheel inner part looks like it came from a beetle?!

What's all this fuss about an electronic handbrake about?

The current Golf has the brake hold function on it anyway. It works so well that the handbrake is not needed for hill starts.

An electronic handbrake is just the next logical progression. Unless of course people want to use the handbrake for turning...

When I was a lad (in Northern Ireland) that sort of behaviour used to land you in hospital with gunshot wounds to the knees! Especially if you had 'borrowed' the car.
        Looking for:- RS4 B7 Avant.
Current:- Amarok V6 Sportline; Mazda CX-9 Azami AWD
Previous - Mk 6 R manual; Mk 7 R manual; Passat 130 TDi Wagon. Mk 7.5 Wolfsburg Wagon.

i have to say, from the pics at the motor show it looks pretty nice in red

the wheel design on the red car is nice, too. i dont really know why there is this fetish with two tone wheels these days, but a simple powdercoat in bright silver'll fix 'em up.

The red stripe through the headlights isn't that special, the normal models with the xenons have the same strip in chrome.

Not a huge fan of any of the wheel designs, they remind me of the ugly wheels people put on commodore utes. I hope they refine the wheel design a bit, or at least give us a choice between stylish European and ugly bogan.
In all other aspects I am very excited by the mk7 and it's the front runner for replacing my mk6 when the lease expires mid 2014

Been watching a lot of the reviews of the new Audi A3. I'd much prefer the more subtle exterior and the exquisite interior. I really am looking forward to the way the new GTI drives but when it comes time to make a decision on which to buy, if that opportunity arises, I will be going for the new audi. Personally I find the interior/exterior of the GTI a slight turn off at the moment.

So after having seen this in person the other day, I can assure you it's a really nice piece of design. It's good see a proper step up in design terms from the previous model (unlike the V-VI 'facelift'). The new headlight/Gti stripe amalgamation is flawless to say the least. The interior is also a massive step up from previous models and feels like a much more upmarket German brand
One of the VW representatives at the stand said to me that the 0-100 time was also considerably played down by VW, so expect some banging grunt

interesting to read, as always these things can look different in the flash than what glean from pics. so good to hear it turns out well. look forward to seeing it to. wonder if they will bring a version out for our local car shows in melb sydney. vw have a great following in australia so hopefully they understand our interest. I'd go to a motor show just to see a mk7 gti pre release
                    Once had a Red mk6 GTI + DSG + leather + sunroof + mdi + towbar

now have a gorgeous Red Merc A250 AMG Sport

But how does it sound? Be good if it had some growl.

Where can it be seen in person? Or were you in Germany?
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

maybe i should've reworded my original question......

what r the specs of the mk7 GTi engine?
will it still b an CCZ (EA888 ) engine, or a new one all together? what r the power output figures?

Just to clarify - that's March 2013 in Germany, not Australia.

Engine is still an EA888 I believe. Specs are 162kW/350Nm (standard) and 169kW/350Nm (higher performance model, with mechanical LSD, etc).
