Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • [QUOTE=SteveMc;1251995]For whatever reason, maybe something involved with the extra grunt of the R, we all know the turning circle of our cars resembles that of an interurban double decker. So, the turning lock required for one-go reverse park is simply not there. But I agree with all here - kerb rashes by one's own hand much more "satisfying" than those from automaton. I learn you good, grasshoppers !

    QUOTE]

is it just the R that has the semi trailer style turning circle? something to do with AWD?

re the park assist, i spent about an hour trying to get it to work, until i finally realised it wasn’t fitted to the R. not fussed by not not having it, just seemed strange that the R doesn’t have it.

      • What is the Turing circle of the R against a regular Golf?

          • That's the same as the regular Golf isn't it?

I actually find my Highline pretty good comparatively. Not as good as my old Getz, but certainly better than others out there!

            • The 19" wheels limit the turning circle badly. I suspect that that 10.9 metre figure is for a Golf R on 18s. My Mk 6 on 18s was far better than either of my last two Rs which are both on 19s.

Yeah the brochures for all the Golfs said 10.9, so presumably stock setups.

i have a cul de sac at end of street. the wife’s audi q5 and my old merc c230 could do a u turn easily. the golf R wagon needs a generous 3 point turn.

nit picking - i’m really living the car.

                  • Hey guys forgive me if there is already a thread on this...
But when the R gets here I want to turn off the Fake Soundatkor (OBD11) and do a resonator delete.

Would like to know if anyone has done this to a R and what does it sound like?
I would like a more true exhaust note but not a loud or drowning sound inside the cabin....
                    Thoughts?

                      • I love the red delete, although the kids say there is too much drone. I also like the fake sound on though. I’ve also opened the exhaust flaps permanently.

Hey Alex ... I did the res delete a month or so ago. When the muffler shop guy showed me the resonator's straight thru path after he took it out, I immediately thought I'd be a bit disappointed with the sound improvement. Sure enough I was. The device itself just isn't capable of really absorbing that much sound, but it's probably worth doing it you're afraid of the drone effect. It's a cheap mod which is easily reversed. For what more could you ask ? It'll definitely pass the wife test, too - as in, if you don't let on she won't notice the difference.

Me too! Trust ze Germans - they know what they're doing!

Plus it's not "fake" sound... just amplified real sound resonated through the windscreen

                            • Hey guys. Got a set of auto folding mirrors with the sequential blinker (dynablink) from ESC tuning.

Just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction with regards to installing them. I know there are DIYs about them but I don’t trust myself working on a car this new. I’m in Sydney btw.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Nope. It is fully synthetic (or fake) engine noise, being reflected by the front screen.
IMHO it sounds like a badly out-of-tune 2 stroke lawnmower.
                                Soundaktor = 0% is perfect.
                                YMMV
