Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Probably, just that if the ECU has the same number/revision then the gains would have to be made somewhere else.
    Who knows.

    • I thought it was fairly common knowledge that the Australian spec R wasn't really detuned. The main issue being power loss on hot days when a significant amount was lost. From memory 50 Nm on the Mk 6 when ambient in the high 30s was being mentioned by others a few years ago.

Anyone got actual figures on this?
      Looking for:- RS4 B7 Avant.
Current:- Amarok V6 Sportline; Mazda CX-9 Azami AWD
Previous - Mk 6 R manual; Mk 7 R manual; Passat 130 TDi Wagon. Mk 7.5 Wolfsburg Wagon.

      • Also you have to remember that the dyno done in Aus did notice power being made at a different rev band but only slightly different.

        • Do you know whether there been any change to the TD1 flag after an ECU tune - Has APR been able to address this?

            • Well, the car is in for a tune.

Did not particularly fill me with confidence in APR making customer's sign a liability waiver prior to undertaking the tune. Whilst I understand that tuning is not normally covered by any guarantee's APR is obviously quite concerned that it does increase the likelihood of turbo failure on the Mk7 R.

Interesting, they'd need to be careful on the wording of such a waiver as unless it is 'expected' to blow up your turbo, they cannot make you sign over your rights. Australian law is pretty specific like that (same goes for warranties).

Good luck, I'm keen to know what you think of it. I'm going to sit by the sidelines for a while to wait and see how this tune turns out (plus my car only has 231kms on it)...

I think I'll investigate the handling options first. Already looking into a nice set of KW's that integrate with the car's electronic damping. Direct plug and play!

Nah mate not unless a dyno run is included in the tune price. Is it? I didn't ask my motivations are more to get the downpipe on.

This waiver may certainly edge some more customers Revo's way but as you said it was worded along the lines of, if the turbo is going to fail its going to fail and you cant blame the APR tune.

From what I understand that's true, although the tune can dramatically bring that failure forward somewhat (I read stories of guys who had failures within hours of the tune).

Everybody is panicking about these turbo failures in any event, I'm sure in the fullness of time the full story/resolution of the problem will come out.

                      Cheers.

Was ready but not until after 4-00 pm for your boxcode, so ready for the morning.

Yes, there is exhaust specific file for the Golf R

I'm going in Wednesday I have intake only does this mean I am to get the "intake" tune and then have to fork out more when I get exhaust, intercooler etc?

No change for intake / intercooler / catback. If you change your cat & downpipe, you will require the exhaust specific tune.
