The Bad-
Oh my god that GPS screen is terrible. In this day of HD, Retina displays etc etc to put in such a rubbish screen is almost a deal breaker.
The gloss black console looks a bit tacky, I looked in a PP GTi and it had a lovely matt textured trim that looked so much nicer than the gloss in the R.
The GPS screen is terrible.
No electric seats? Really?
Did I mention the screen?

A work colleague got one yesterday and that's the first thing I noticed. Looks terrible and cheap. I thought there was a premium 8inch system or something that gave you the good quality screen?

There is - saved for Skoda , or a very expensive ($2k plus) retrofit.

New Golf R for Immediate Sale

If anybody in Melbourne or Victoria is interested in purchasing a new Golf R straight off the showroom floor, there is one available at Barloworld Glen Waverley. It's specification is Pure White, DSG, Leather and DA, with just 23kms on the odometer. The sticker price is $66,388, but after speaking to the Assistant Sales Manager, this car without the full list of options is a little less popular than one with the lot, so I think a good deal might be possible. P.S. The tyres fitted are the correct specification Bridgestone Potenza RE050A's.

$66k LOL.. Good luck.. I paid $60,700 for mine with all the options including sunroof which that one doesn't have.. If you don't have all the options this will hurt you come resale time in a few years I reckon

No, but I guarantee in 3 years time when I sell it, it will be a **** load easier to sell for $40k with all options than someone asking $38k and went the no options

That is not what the common experience is. Condition, Kms and colour are all that matters. Options are worthless

but it makes sense if there are two used R's, one is asking $38k and the other with fully loaded options ($8k extra new) asking $40k. for the $2k extra including leather, sunroof, driver assist; i know i would choose the fully loaded one

but if say the fully loaded one asks for $5k extra over the base one, i would then think twice.

How long does a second hand R usually take to sell?

This is how i think of options on a second hand car.

If a car has a sunroof it automatically puts it to the bottom of the list for me. I don't want the extra weight and complication for no benefit.

The std seats in the R look good so I would not want to pay for leather. Maybe for a GTI to get rid of the tartan.

Driver assist would bump it up over one without, but on a second hand car it is just something else to go wrong, so maybe not.

In saying all that I pick up my GTI PP next week with leather and driver assist.

Buy the options on your new car if you want the features but realise that people can see them as costly problems on second hand cars.

I actually think that 'bundling' options (such as in the S3 and the 'Drive Assist' packages on the R) or limited the options that are available (such as they've done with the R), has actually increased the demand for optioning up. The incremental cost represents far better value and when the difference between a base and fully spec'd model is between 5-10k, it seems most are leaning towards a higher spec'd car these days if possible.

On the forum alone, look at how many fully loaded MK7 R's there are compared to fully loaded MK6 R's. It's a similar trend with the S3 too and I bet sales stats from VW/Audi would confirm this hypothesis.

With this said, it will then flow onto the 2nd hand market and 2nd hand cars with these options will likely be considered the 'norm' and therefore more desirable and probably easier to sell/move.

Having just sold a base level GTI, I can tell you it was quite difficult and I had a few potential buyers end up purchasing other another vehicle which was better spec'd despite the higher price. I ended up selling mine for what I consider a 'top buy' based on age, km's, condition.

Cars are an emotional purchase for us and that emotional motivation to buying a car like this still most definitely remains on the 2nd hand market (you could argue it is amplified) which definitely carries over to options.

Does that mean you get 1:1 for options on the 2nd hand market? Of course not and that's why at the end of the day I still think this is the most sensible way to look at it:

When I was looking at a MK6 R a few years back, I wanted a sunroof and Black 19's but didn't really want to pay for leather or anything else.

Now when buying the new S3, I've loaded it up with with most options because I intend to hang onto the car for a while and I actually wanted them this time around. I def wanted the pano roof, wanted what was included int he PP (sound, LED, seats etc) and def wanted the Assistance Pack as well. The purchase was purely driven by what I wanted.
