Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

It is just an unfortunate case that VWA decides to skimp on another option.Driving: Golf R Mk7 MY14 - Pure White, DSG, Leather, DAP and Sunroof

I've used it in last year's Subaru Liberty and Outback. So it is VWA holding back options. Given the hardware seems present, it works in Audi's and OS VWs have it I wonder if VAGCOM could be used to activate it?Golf 7R | 5 Door | Limestone Grey | DSG | Sunroof | Leather | Driver Assist | Tint | Formerly GTi11.5

Originally posted by anduril View PostHey guys, finally secured my R today! White, DSG, Leather, Drivers Assist and Roof - delivered late next week. It's the biggest purchase I've made in my life (bar the deposit on our unit) but it's something I needed to get myself for the big 3 0.
Would like to gather some thoughts from other fellow VW owners out there with regards to the 'after-sales' options on what's worthwhile, and where I could land myself a better deal (Sorry this is my first brand new car purchase so I'm a little clueless, and still slightly overwhelmed).
- Paint Coating (something Nano): I suppose this is like the Opti Coat everyone's talking about? This one comes with lifetime warranty and they told me that I can go back for any repairs etc. if there is damage to the paint. Quoted: just below $1k
- Leather Preserver: Not interested in this TBH (I don't park it under the sun and I'm not large/heavy to put stress on the leather) unless you guys think it's absolutely important? Quoted: just below $700
- Tinting: 35% Highest legal tint with shatter proof, reducing heat and glare by 60%. This I'm actually interested in but wonder if there are better ones from 3rd party providers. Quoted: $600
Would appreciate any feedback at all on where best to get them done around Sydney or I should just do it at the dealer.
Thanks heaps!
Interior 'protection', in short, no. Clean it or have it cleaned semi-regularly with or without leather protecting agents and it will be fine.
Tinting, pay no more than $300, unless you know it to be of exceptional quality (ie not dealership)

Quick update on insurance if anyone is interested (all annuals quoted):
- NRMA (I've had roadside with them for 6 years now and prior car insurance was with them): $915
- AAMI (Current car insurer for 6 years): $1,250
- Allianz: $1,160
- Bingle: $1,550!!!
- Suncorp: $1,300
- youi: $789
All quotes are comprehensive on market value for 2 drivers (late 20's) listed, perfect driving history, and no extras (hired car, windscreen etc.), and youi's quote already includes hired car for a maximum of 14 days.
It's obviously worthwhile to shop around!!! Has anyone gotten anything better?Driving: Golf R Mk7 MY14 - Pure White, DSG, Leather, DAP and Sunroof

Otherwise get a good car detailer to apply a basic hydrophobic sealant for upto $100, and re-apply each year for best protection IMO.

Tinting wise, I'm still unsure who to go with, what film/products to go for. There seems to be a lot more varieties out there with different tint shops promoting diff products.Driving: Golf R Mk7 MY14 - Pure White, DSG, Leather, DAP and Sunroof

At the end of the day though everyone's going to get different quotes courtesy of all the variables.

I've now spoken to 5 VW dealers in regards to the golf R, the best price I could get was a white R with leather for $57,509 drive away.... 4 dealers were not discounting at all.....
Looks like I will go the S3 as I feel it ****s on the R in every thing.. The interior of the S3 is just incredible...
Def agree with the S3 interior!
I saw both the Grey and Blue R today side by side and whilst I think the Grey looks superb in pictures, the Lapiz Blue definitely is a stand out in the flesh!

Each to their own I guess - I've had cruise in cars for what, 15+ years! and even if I lost all my fingers I could still count on my hand how many times I've used it. Yes, I realise I'm in a very small minority.
At $1,800 I wouldn't be ticking the box either.
