Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Bixenon high beam uses the same hid bulbs (as low beam) but they have mechanism inside the lens to flip the beam up for high beam. And this I love it for driving at night

Unlike the 135i I think it's a very handsome car.

Good comparison - as you said (and impression I get), the Audi/Golf R are well made but rather "bland". Merc certainly has "wow" factor, but I'd imagine would be rather uncomfortable day-to-day. And June next year delivery is ridiculous.
I am seriously considering Skoda RS as my next car - same platform (new MQB) and engine/drivetrain as new Golf GTI , but huge amount of space and from all reports almost as good otherwise as VW (although probably not up to Audi interior quality). In fact I think it has more "character", both from exterior looks point of view and with some things that are unique to it (like sports seats). Definitely better value as comes with everything from variable ratio steering to ride control adjustment and even "sports-mode" piped sound. Even has 8" Columbus Satnav/media system!
Down side obviously is some negative stigma attached to Skoda brand and consequent lower resale value - but what you save in driveaway price would probably compensate. Only other thing is I believe there's a bit of a waiting list on these as well as series 3 only just being released (but probably only a few months at worst?!).....
Food for thought :p2011 147TSi 7spd DSG Reflex Silver, 18" New York Alloys, Leather with MDI, ECB Nudge Bar, Viezu Tune (Work in Progress), Eibach ProKit Springs, SuperPro Poly ALK & Rear Trailing Arm Bushes, H&R 26mm Rear ASB and Whiteline HD Adjustable End-Links, VAR Design 3" Downpipe, Sprint Booster, Auto-Polar FIS+ Advanced Module, GTI Sports Pedals, Flappy Paddle Strg Wheel, LED fogs as DRL, chrome blingy bits

Has anyone looked into a front lip for the MK7 R?
My R is due for delivery in around two weeks and I'm keen to get something put on to give the front end to offer some protection. The area I live in has some seriously angled roads between streets and main roads and while I have quite a bit of experience driving a low car but the Missus is used to driving a forrester. Even being careful there are some spots that you just cant avoid scraping in some spots.
Ideally I want to put a carbon fibre front lip on but can't find any available for the MK7 R yet. I have found this cheap option on ebay that I was thinking of putting on as an interim solution but still I am not keen on drilling holes for this and then redrilling for a proper lip in the future.

Keen to hear any ideas, thoughts, suggestions?

So I guess i'll answer the following question myself when I test drive the R and GTI PP back to back tomorrow. However, I have been reading a lot of comments comparing the two cars, and I'm particularly concerned about the apparent 'firmness' of the ride and the associated noise/vibration/harshness of the R compared to the GTIPP. I don't have any intentions to take the car to a track or do anything like that, so for everyday use on our terrible Adelaide roads I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts/opinions are in relation to just the ride quality, firmness and the NVH between the two cars. Is the R as harsh as what some people are saying?

The Golf R is the kind of car that can put a smile on your face I would go for the Golf R instead of the GTI pp if I had too choose one of the two, but that's just me try them both and see what are your needs, that should give you a better answer.
