420 HP (309 kW) and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft) from a 2 litre petrol engine is just insane!!!!

Not when you've mucked around with an Evo 4G63 before. I believe the boxer Subaru engines were also capable of some decent tunes.

Not to mention that the 4B11 in the Evo X is capable of these exceeding those numbers with an aftermarket panel filter, 3 port boost controller, 'zuast and tune alone.

I think he wanted proof that the S3 could be had for what you claimed it could.

For the reasons below why Golf R will be preferred

1. Cheaper servicing which is capped. Also cheaper parts prices and cheaper extended warranty and insurance
2. A least the R is not pretending to be prestige car. If you want a real prestige car, get a BMW, Merc or Range Rover as oppose to a 'VW with leather'
3. Resale value is better on VW generally and will have wider appeal when selling
4. Audi dealers are generally stuck up noobs who think they are selling a prestige car - which is laughable when comparing an Audi to my Range Rover
5. Audi back up in remote areas would be inferior to VW

I could go on and on but as this is a VW forum, I would have enough supporters here. If you love Audi, go to the Audi forum.

We've heard this before but as other OPs have indicated, Audi dealers seem quite amenable to discounts where VW are not. I was surprised my friend got a Q3 with comparable specs to mine for less than what I paid for my Tiguan.

So while Audi resale numbers may be seem lower than their list prices, it may not be as bad as you'd imagine because there are decent accounts.

I suspect my resale price of my Tiguan may be worse off than my friend's Q3 because I had to put in a fair bit more options to get to what the Audi had in a base config.

Don't forget peeps, the mk6 R was more expensive than the same generation S3 in the UK and Germany. Actually it was nearly 2000 pounds more in the UK, and they sold every one of them. Makes sense in a way. It was limited in numbers compared to the Audi and exclusivity came into the price. So is it only in Aus that Audi gets away with big premiums over competitors?
Seems their marketing dept has done a stelar job of convincing us they are worth more.

If you're serious, and not casually asking for a price for the S3, you can basically get approx 7% off, so currently the base S3 is $65 885 drive away, so after some negotiations, you will come to a price of approx $61 273.

1. I know not necessarily applicable to everyone but with corporate deal, free servicing certainly makes this point redundant. Insurance quotes pretty much on par with my GTI (after taking into account the fact the S3 is worth about 3/4 times as much).
2. The S3 is by far the nicer car interior wise imo. It certainly feels prestige from a build quality pov and from general feel. It's better than the BMW and Merc imo and generally considered class leading.
3. Not necessarily true, all depends on the price you pick it up for as already mentioned.

If you think the S3 has a nice interior, you haven't sat in my Range Rover which is superior in every way. Heck my GTi looks better than those pretend retro dials. If you buy an Audi, like Lexus, you think you are buying a prestige car when it is really a cheaper alternative to a BMW, Mercedes or Range Rover. Hence why no real estate agents (who are the most image conscious people) in my inner city blue ribbon Liberal suburb don't drive Audis....

And if you live in a non capital city, there are more VW dealers than Audi dealers for after sales support.

I must admit I have not sat in a new Range Rover so no idea how that looks/feels. Although I respectfully disagree that a GTI looks better than the A3/S3. Coming from a MKV GTI, I almost went ahead with a MK6 R but couldn't get over the fact the interior was almost the same and felt dated, then checked out a MK7 GTI and it was not much better than the MK6 nor my MK5. I gave the Audi a go and was instantly impressed and like I said, most reviews consider it miles ahead of the A45 and M135i.

Well funny that. Live inner city in Sydney and see plenty of real estate agents driving Audis. BUT who cares what the perception is, the fact that the S3 was a nicer looking, better spec'd, classier and easier to live with yet with dam right impressive power for less than the A45 and M135i is what gets it over the line for me (and for those who have got one). Frankly I am sure most of us couldn't care less whether it's considered 'prestige' or not.

And if you live in a non capital city, there are more VW dealers than Audi dealers for after sales support.

It's interesting that Range Rover gets really bad marks for reliability and build quality in a lot of the surveys I read
