Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

it wont be cheap and the Golf R needs all of the above
Why does it need something which
    doesn't ride as well,
which sticks to you in hot weather,
    which breaks all the time,
which can be done by a $150 tomtom and
    which adds extra weight?
To keep up with the Joneses.

EDIT: then again, it's not my money, so who really cares about what someone else feels they need to buy?

Couldn't of said it any better myself. The only option i would get would be if they offered recaro seats again

Testing drive a manual S3 this coming Saturday, and will test drive the S3 with S-Tronic the week after.
Ordered - Audi S3 Sedan in Sepang Blue (BW 29)

              • Should give you a very good idea about how the Golf R will drive. Dad is very keen on trading his R for S3, particularly with the price reduction. I think the S3 will have the magnetic ride control that the R won't get. I've heard it's pretty amazing in other Audis and HSV's. From all accounts though the new mk7 golf has better ride than the Mk 6 anyway so shouldn't be a problem on the new R.
I think VW are going to take an enormous risk with the R if they get too greedy and raise the price like they did slightly in the GTI.
The other problem is that clearly they aren't keeping their dealers up to speed and in the dark. With the R not coming out for many months the S3 will steal sales from the upcoming R. I suppose Audi is the premium brand though and should get preference.

The magnetic ride is part of the $4900 sports pack on the S3.

                      • I test drove a manual S3 yesterday. It's a beautiful machine but suffers a bit too much turbo lag for my liking. My daily driver is a 2010 GTI with APR stage 2. The S3 didn't seem any quicker, although on paper it probably has more power. It just doesn't seem as much fun. My car has the DSG and I think I'd really miss the exhaust crackle too.

That would be fixed by getting the auto.
Also could you imagine apr stage 2 on the golf R/s3

                          • Maybe I will need to test drive a Golf GTI as I test drove a manual S3 yesterday as well, all I can say is wow. Yes, there was a slight lag, but once it get's moving, it rockets.

Will take a S-tronic S3 out for a test drive hopefully next week, will report back then.

As a daily drive, I can easily live with it, and if you want to over-take, there is plenty of go on offer, tiny tap of the accelerator, and you go from 80 to over 110 in a blink.

But for us though, we'll wouldn't consider the GTI as we really like what we've read and seen on the web for the Audi A3/S3 sedan which is coming early next year.

Having gone from APR stg2 GTI to golf R, I would agree that it's not as fun. Maybe m135i or a45 for out right thrills. I don't think going to AWD is necessarily the way to get more fun esp with haldex (unless the car is mental like a45).

I think "downgrading" would give heaps more fun, such as a fiesta ST. Would love one...

I hope by being able to turn stability and traction control off completely with the new R (well apparently) some fun might be had, even if it is just going to a track for a day here or there
