Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I've found the Two Merc dealers I've been to very nice indeed. They weren't pushy at all. Make nice lattes as well
They were very happy to arrange longer test drives. Just for my wife and I.
Then spent 1 hour answering questions about the car and all it's features.
As you can probably tell, I've switched to the dark side and will be picking up an A250 this week. Wish I could afford an A45!!
Dad and I drove one (for him) and can say that it was easily the fastest car I've ever (and probably WILL EVER) drive. 4.4 secs to 100 doesn't tell half the story. Incredibly charismatic as well. This is where VW have lost me I'm afraid. Beautifully engineered cars inside and out but look identical to the Mk6 and haven't moved the game forward. I think the Golf will win Wheels Car of the Year and deserve to but I wanted something different this time.
I think the new Golf R would be a better day to day car for comfort but the A45 is on a completely different performance level.
I think Audi are even more recalcitrant than VW with moving the game forward.
I think the new GTI is a brilliant car. I think the Golf R will be a brilliant car. The A45 is an AMAZING car but no where near as liveable day to day as the VW's. I think the suspension in the A250 is still too firm but I'm happy to live with it. For me the Merc has the charisma missing for the Golfs. Can't lose any way you go.

What options did you select for the A250?

        • The A250 has standard bi-xenons with LED running lights, 18 inch alloys, DSG auto, man made suede seats with red stitching, park assist, reversing camera, panoramic sunroof, proper! looking fake carbon fibre dash trim, tinted glass (back windows), electric folding mirrors from $49,990 before on roads
I've added AMG exclusive package, driving assistance and Command packages
I'm very happy but I think the GTI and R will be fantastic cars as well but VW are taking their customers a bit for granted at the moment.
A very large percentage of A Class buyers (particularly A250 sport) have come from Golf GTI.
Would be nice if Merc Australia offered the 4 MATIC version of the A250 like they do in Europe because I can't afford $83,000 for an A45!

            hmmm interesting:

WRX STI and Evo IX ran turbochargers the size of an infant’s head, causing serious throttle lag followed by even more serious forward thrust. In the wake of these two wild, winged warriors the motor industry has learned a lot about the art of turbocharging, virtually eliminating delay to throttle orders in the process. At least that’s what we thought before setting off on the trails of Hannibal in these highly tuned triplets. No more turbo lag? Hop into the S3 and the ancient vice is back, large as life and annoying. The extra-cost S-tronic may to an extent cushion the effect, but in the manual version one must change down early to keep at least the bottom two LEDs of the boost gauge lit most of the time.
People sook about turbo lag like no tomorrow. Does no one understand how a turbo works? No lag = tiny turbo with small turbine and compressor and a small hotside. However, this means it'll choke at higher exhaust flow levels and power tapers off, then everyone complains there's not enough power. You cannot have it all with turbocharging. I have an evo with a size up from the stock turbo, seriously, they aren't that big. More like stock VW and Audi turbos are tiny. Driving a turbo car is something you get used to and once you learn the car, you can drive them smoothly.

            • Yeah,I was shocked how tiny the Golf turbo was compared to the wrx turbo, but the result was very nice 2k-3k torque that the Subaru just didn't have. I think the k04 is a nice small turbo that gives good normal drivability, and reasonable top end.

              • The big mistake everyone here is making is thats its turbo lag on the R's and most likely the new version of the S3 above. On the R's its a DBW delay, try putting your foot down a bit further so the DBW delay is removed and you'll see what I mean.
We have the K04's putting out 210 give or take and that is very hard to achieve on a VF34/35 STI size turbo on our dyno (we do a lot of Subies as well). The K04 is a good turbo well mated to the engine all you have to do is watch compressor surge between 3 and 4K

                • Yes you can definitely feel a slight delay due to the electronic throttle, vs say an evo with mechanical throttle. Reviewers perpetuating myths like DBW being mistaken for turbo lag is pretty bad, I mean if you don't what the difference is you shouldnt be reviewing cars IMO. The little K04 does very well for it's size. Anyone got any idea what ID the inducer/exducer of the compressor and turbine are? It flows like a 30-35+ lbs/min turbo up top but is making 20+ psi sub 3K which is definitely indicative of a non-laggy turbo.

                  • I have 10psi boost at a measley 3500 on my Garrett 2867GTX ..............with Antilag

Rest of the vehicle is top notch might wait till some tuners have had a hit on her... but for i think ill wait for the Golf 7 R as my current apr2+R would eat it torque wise and top end,and the motors tried and tested..
booked a test 3 weeks ago via emails and phone calls and was going to order one after the test drive quoted 82,900 with all options 4 factory options and you can keep your red seat-belts AMG

                              • Well the price for the Golf R is out in the UK, and its not much cheaper than the S3!

VW Golf R price and specs revealed | Auto Express

The Volkswagen Golf R – the most powerful production Golf ever – is now available to order, with its price starting from £29,900. That’s slightly less than the mechanically similar Audi S3, which costs £30,640.

The sub-£30k price tag is for a three-door R with a manual box, but prices rise to £31,970 for the five-door car fitted with a six-speed DSG unit.
