Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mib1 unable to update maps

    Hello
    I recently bought a used 2013 golf mk7
It had never had an update for the headunit or the maps
when I attempt to update the maps following Volkswagens guide it loads for a second and then swaps to “data is invalid” error message
I thought this was due to the mib not having an update
I followed mibhelpers guide and got my car to the newest firmware
And the maps still do the exact same thing load for a second and then they are invalid
my backups of the 2013 maps still load
I’m really not sure what to do here
thank you for all your help

Not telling you to suck eggs, but:
Are you are using the original SD card or a Volkswagen approved one?
Did you download the maps for Golf until 2015/Discover Media/MIB1?
If you want to use the original SD card SAVE THE DATA BEFORE REWRITING OVER IT.

If these hints don't work then you will need to see a dealer.
The MIB1 had some issues with map updates and a software fix was available to allow you to load newer versions via the Volkswagen map update site. Your firmware update may have address that, but you have not stated what you started with and now have.
There is not a lot of information getting around on an alternate fix.
The current ones are from mid 2020, still newer than 2013, but most people are using carplay/android auto for navigation.

Yes it’s the original sd card
as I say in my post if I reload the backed up 2013 maps it works again so the sd card is probably fine and yes I’m using the until 2015 maps
I started with mstd eu vw p3040
      and went to MSTD_EU_VW_P5301
I can’t find a way to get CarPlay in my car and retain access to my mib
if you know of way please let me know thank you for your help

        Small Update
it does not load on a different SD CARD
my 2013 maps still work fine
AND the maps load for like an entire minute long enough to see the version and that the map is up to date
        and then they go away
        with the check data error

MIB1 units can be proper fussy. Have you tried clearing the NavDB? Go to MIB then Advanced Settings then Clean Navigation DB. That sometimes does the trick Also make sure your using the right map version for your MIB1 brcause newer ones won't work. If that doesnt help it might be worth checkin your FEC codes are all good

            @Echo: Hi.

Below is a copy of a previous reply to this same problem on an early Australian model Golf mk7

The MIB units on the first release mk7s in Australia in 2013 were relatively rudimentary and in particular for the purpose of SANAV function, these units assumed that map updates would be undertaken by the dealer (using their ODIS tool)

DIY map updates on Australian mk7s came along after the first release cars and for this purpose the MIB needs a piece of software called "VW Mapcare"!

I'm guessing of course - but I suspect that your MIB (the infotainment "brains" that has the 2 x SD slots) is missing the Mapcare software. If this is the first time that you have tried a map update on your car via the DIY method - then this is almost certainly the reason for your problems.

Alas, Mapcare authorization is a dealer thing - but once installed, map updates should work.

Now, I'm not sure how much VW will charge for this software (normally any work at a dealer is costed at a price approaching the annual budget of a small African nation).

My understanding is that the minimum time for ODIS access is one hour and the current cost is around $220 (which is outrageous IMO)! It shouldn't take anywhere near 1 x hour to install Mapcare - but this is a case where the dealer has your family jewels firmly in their grip and it's only a matter of how much they squeeze !!

            Don
Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.
