Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Should I buy it if it fits or is there more to it?

HI.. friend of mine is selling set of wheels (8.5x19 ET42 5x112).
I checked it will fit but would there be rubbing with 245x35 or even 235x35?
    I believe I have 8x19 ET50 5x112 on 2019 Golf R MK7.5 (Please correct me if I am wrong)
And no suspension or body work done. Standard OEM stock.

    Thanks in advance.

On 235/35/19 tyres those wheels will fit perfectly on a Mk7 Golf. Moving to a 245/35 then you might have issues with rubbing on the guards. So stick with 235/35 to be safe.

I have the exact same spec rims with 235/35 tyres and they fit perfectly on my Mk7 GTI with lowering springs.

      Thanks Lucas.
When you said, "might have issue with rubbing" is this when you do full turn on steering or just rubbing regardless.

IF is only rubbing on FULL steering turns, how about staggered 8x19 ET50 with 235 front and 8.5x19 ET42 with 245 at the back.....just wondering...

Just with suspension movement in general. Even with 235 wide tyres, you will possible have to do what is called the "fender mod" which is removing one of the screws holding the inner wheel liner to give a little more clearance for the wider rims/tyres. Although with standard suspension, you might not need to do this.

How many mm clearance do you recover by doing the fender mod? I’m in a similar situation and hoping to gain about 4-5mm - is this likely? Thanks!

No its a few mm at best, just enough to stop or reduce light rubbing depending on your fitment. I doubt you will gain 4-5mm but its a free mod that takes only a few minutes (and has no negatives) so worth a try.
