  • VW Golf MK7 - 2022/06/20 official map update

Need your help with my VW Golf MK7 Highline.

I attempted to use the 2022/06/20 official map update from the following. However the file is 25GB and my SD card is only 8GB!

The update didn't include all the other countries previously I'm sure.

Has anyone completed the latest update? What am I doing wrong?

The issue is I have wiped my card and I can't restore the navigation. Does anyone have a working copy of an update? I really need to restore navigation. Thank you.

    Discover media or Discover Pro?
If you are needing the VW SD card to operate it then that would be the Discover media.
    You need this link https://navigation-maps.volkswagen.c...M3_1910_V16.7z
The June 2022 version for SD card and only 5.29 GB

Flipper Dog. How do you install this, is it a copy and paste exercise?

I had previously updated my SD card using the Discovercare app, but it doesn't pick up the 2022 map update, only the 2020 one which I have so says the maps are up to date.

      Thanks

If you have MIB1 (pre 2015 Discover media) than try this link.

@flipper Dog what parts of the 24GB file do I need to copy over, as the SD card with the car is only 8GB?

          Thanks

You have to use all of it as it downloads or it wont work. Or you could be trying to use the wrong map

You are trying to download the wrong map. The 24gb one is for a different nav unit

The one Flipper Dogs reply no 2 is the correct one. Download it to your HDD and COPY the whole thing to the SD card

Sorry I can't help you there. Didn't realise it was so large.
You could try the SDS folders and remove all the languages except English but I don't think that would lower the contents by 2/3.
I have not seen the folder structure on that download.

Make sure you save your current map contents and try playing around removing some country maps on the latest version to reduce the size, it may work, it may not.

The other option is to seek out a SD card from Europe on a market place web site, they are 32GB with the current maps on them.

Have you tried Discover Care ?

Seems he has a Media which has a VW card and uses much smaller maps than the Pro which has the 25GB map and loads it into the unit. If he has wiped the SD card he is in trouble as that shouldnt be done and just a map may not fix it.

As I said I think the correct one is in reply 2.

Also have never seen a map you could edit it and still work.

All have to be loaded as the complete thing and the location just uses the map needed

I tried a long time ago to delete countries and map never worked till I installed the whole thing.

Try reply 2 link as it seems to be correct as Im downloading it and it is a map for Media not Pro

Ive just gone to the update portal and the map in reply 2 is the 2022 map for a Discover Media for a Golf from 2015 on It is 5.3 gb

                  Hi Hillbilly,

Just looking at your last reply. My car is up to 2015 as it is a 2013 car not after 2015. If I select that on the map update site and the discover media unit not the pro, it gives me a 24gb download.

Am I doing something wrong here!?!

                  Thanks

As I have already said. go to reply 2
and click on that link it is for PRE 2015 DISCOVER MEDIA and is 5GB.

Also some 2013 units had problems and required an update from the dealer.

That link is for units that HAVE to use a VW branded SD card and nothing else so if your card has a VW part no on it thats what you should do AFAIK. I could be wrong but if your car only has a small capacity card you wont be needing the 24GB map

@hillbilly this still doesn't work for me so I assume that it may require an update from the dealer. It just notes that there is no navigation database on the SD card so won't read it properly.

Does anyone have any idea on the update that may be required from the dealer of any other way of updating the database?

@hoskrunner: hmm...... it really all depends!!

The MIB units on the first release mk7s in Australia in 2013 were relatively rudimentary and in particular for the purpose of SANAV function, these units assumed that map updates would be undertaken by the dealer (using their ODIS tool)

DIY map updates on Australian mk7s came along after the first release cars and for this purpose the MIB needs a piece of software called "VW Mapcare"!

I'm guessing of course - but I suspect that your MIB (the infotainment "brains" that has the 2 x SD slots) is missing the Mapcare software. If this is the first time that you have tried a map update on your car via the DIY method - then this is almost certainly the reason for your problems.

Alas, Mapcare authorization is a dealer thing - but once installed, map updates should work.

Now, I'm not sure how much VW will charge for this software (normally any work at a dealer is costed at a price approaching the annual budget of a small African nation).

My understanding is that the minimum time for ODIS access is one hour and the current cost is around $220 (which is outrageous IMO)! It shouldn't take anywhere near 1 x hour to install Mapcare - but this is a case where the dealer has your family jewels firmly in their grip and it's only a matter of how much they squeeze !!

                        Don

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.

Let me know if they were helpful.

I have 1 2015 Mk7 R, which has Discover Media and a 8GB SD card that holds the maps and goes in the unit in the glovebox.

In the past I've been able to use the VW Discover Care app to upgrade the maps, but on that app at the moment the latest version is the 2020, which is 3.6GB for multi-region (Aust & NZ).

If you go to the VW Australia map website, there is a 2022 update available to download, but it covers many more countries and is 24GB.

So the only option is to try and replace the files for this region on the original SD card, which creates the risk of making that card no longer work.

I have been unsuccessful in making a clone of the VW SD card using either XCopy or the Aoemi drive cloning software, I'd be interested to know if anyone has managed that because it would allow me to install a bigger SD card.

Volkswagen uses SD cards with an unique CID (Card identification) register. The MIB unit reads this CID and will allow access to the SD card if the CID matches.
To use non Volkswagen SD cards you need to change the CID or flash your MIB unit.

Have a look at this youtube clip MIB2 navigation SD card CID Lock removal with MIB STD2 Toolbox - YouTube it will give you more information. Note they are talking about the MIB2, not the MIB1. You need to research further to see if it is applicable you whatever MIB unit you may have.
