  • Golf 2.0TDI total oil loss

So my wife's 2014 Golf Highline diesel left a bit of oil on the garage floor Thursday night and then on the way home from work yesterday the oil light came on (I had warned her to stop if it did). RACQ came and found total oil loss. Looks to be leaking from drivers side front of the engine but very hard to see where. Car was running perfectly prior to this and never a problem. It's done about 110k. Anyone else experience similar?

Did you check the oil to see how much was in it before driving off.

Do you ever check the oil and coolant levels

This is not a gradual thing. It left a large over the garage floor (over one night) and heaps more at my wife's work carpark. Also left a big puddle of oil where she stopped waiting for the RACQ. Oil hadn't been checked in about a month but it has never used any significant amount of oil.

As I said above there is zero oil in it, RACQ said don't even start the engine. It will be trucked to the dealer ASAP. Last service was about 5k ago so not that recent.

So the dealer said that it looks like the "crank seal failed due to wear and tear", no idea of the total cost yet but about 3 hours labour just to find the problem. Not really happy if it was the crank seal and it only lasted 110k km.

Did they do the timing belt/chain and /or tensioners which is due at 105k as they may have nicked the seal in the timing cover as about the only place it would be from

Quite hard to do, since it’s not exposed.

My wife heard from the dealer this afternoon, total cost estimated at $2300 now as the "timing belt" has to be replaced due to being covered in oil. Alternator drive belt is also covered in oil. It's annoying as the timing belt was only replaced 5k ago. They are trying to get VWA to cover some of the cost as this sort of thing shouldn't happen and the car has all VW log book service history. We shall see.

if the belt was done 5k ago then thats the cause of the leak , have a look on the invoice for seals when they replaced the belt

Since the belt doesn't run in oil I don't see how replacing it would affect the lower crank seal. The seal "lost tension" and apparently you have to buy the seal and housing together. We also have to replace the timing belt and idler arms and bearings (since the oil would've gotten into the grease). Still waiting to hear if VWA will cover any of the costs.

the seal is usually replaced when the belt is done as a precaution in case it leaked

The seal wasn't on the service report for the 105K service or on the VW service sheet that showed what should be carried out. We have the car back and are waiting to see how much if any VWA are willing to pay of the $2300 cost

The seals aren’t routinely replaced as preventative measure when they don’t leak.
There’s no way that the mechanic could damage the seal during the timing belt replacement.

However, if there were signs of the oil leak in the area, it should be reported/replaced with the timing belt.

The $2300 seems a bit high.

Interesting Transporter. the dealer warned us before the timing belt replacement that the water pump may need to be replaced when they were doing that if there were any signs of a leak ($400) but they never mentioned the crank seal. Wife just heard from the dealer, VWA are paying roughly half, haven't got the full details yet.
