  • Mk7 Headunit Screen

    Hey guys,

I've got this headunit, from a 2013 mk7 highline, it's got satnav etc. I've got alot of dead pixels on the screen. Just wondering if there is anyway to retrofit a 6.5" screen on it or do i need to replace the glovebox unit as well. As far as i'm concerned it is a 5.8" screen?

    Cheers

When did you notice the dead pixels? I have the same issue and only noticed recently. I call it confetti because that's what it looks like to me. I think the 5.8 can only be swapped with another 5.8 screen unless the mib1 is upgraded to a mib2 or pro models.

Gents, screens can be replaced or upgraded with out much issue at all. Replaced my 6.5" with an OEM 8" without issue MY16 Mk7R. Should be plug n play!
Locating the appropriate shroud/trim is generally the hard part.

No they aren't all plug and play....

Yes you can swap an MIB2 6.5 inch screen for an 8 inch as they are the same resolution.
You cannot swap an MIB2 screen into an MIB as they are not the same resolution.
Likewise you cannot use a 9.2 inch screen with an MIB2, or MIB2.5 mid. Only with MIB2.5 high - again its different resolution.

If you have a broken MIB1 screen (ie it's 5.8 inch and doesn't have Apple Carplay/Android Auto) then you can straight swap it with another 5.8 inch screen without issue.
If you want a larger screen you also need to replace the corresponding MIB unit in the glovebox. This requires handling of Component Protection and SWaP licenses...

What's the easiest way to get the component protection and swap license done?

You need someone with access to the official ODIS online software. Dealers have access.
However they can only restore licenses which already exist for your VIN. So if you have an MIB1 and want to upgrade to MIB2/2.5 to gain Carplay/Android Auto and the ability to install an Active Info Display, you need to have a unit supplied that has already been modified.

Or someone who can modify the unit.
