Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • GTI MY 13 Tyre size

I am about to buy my first GTI..I have seen one with 18 inch wheels fitted with 235 tyres. As the GTI is relatively small is it over tyred with 235"s i.e. steering feel and response, tyre noise, unsprung weight.
    Looking forward to your response
    Cheers

225/40/18 Hankook ventus on 18 7.5 51et vw R line rims, have these on my MY18 GTI original. Didnt like the black ones fitted with bridgstone potenza. too noisy and no radial grip (easy to spin the wheels on launch) OMHO

on the 18" the correct size is 225/40r18 on a 7.5" rim. A 235/40r18 shouldn't be fitted to that rim although many do.

If it's 17" then the std size is 225/45r17 but my preferred size on that rim is 235/45r18.

VW OEM rims are heavy. I've had 17", 17" & 18" on my car and I prefer the 17" for where I drive.

My ideal spec would be a lightweight 17x8 ET45 with 235/45r17 Michelin PS4 with a total wheel weight of <17kg
