  • MY19 GTI headlight query

Hi guys, am new to the forum. Currently looking at picking up a MY19 GTI. However am confused as to whether the GTI comes with dynamic cornering light? I've read the spec sheets (which says no), but the sale person today insisted that the headlight will change direction depending on steering input? Also, does the GTI come with twin LED Daytime running light like the R or is it just 1 bar each side? (only got the chance to testdrove the R but not the GTI, and have seen GTI with twin bars DRL on the road, however unsure whether MY19). Thanks guys!

P.S. sorry double post from main GTI thread, thought I'd post it as a separate thread too since hasn't gotten a reply from there.

7.5 R's have Dynamic Light Assist (DLA) which is basically auto high beam which dips and spreads around coming traffic., great feature for night driving on country roads (I have it on my R). Dynamic corning lights are self explanatory and separate to DLA. I cant tell you if the 7.5 GTI has it but check for "DLA" on the spec sheet.

My 7.5 GTI's headlights change direction with the steering input by a small distance (maybe 10-15%). Not sure if that's considered "dynamic cornering lights" or if they are a separate beast.

My Golf R has the dynamic headlamps but also a static bulb offset and angled which comes on when slow cornering to illuminate around the corner. Car parks, driveways etc.

Earthdweller, what do you mean when you ask the question? The old DLA was active lights changing shape and direction with speed and during cornering. DLA with LED in current cars means something different, the light beam shape changes to suit the traffic pattern the car sees.

I just went looking for a YT video to illustrate it and I am more confused than ever. Have a look on this page and DLA videos can go back 6 years and they all mean different things.

i'm not talking about dynamic light assist (which i understand is on the golf R and it's when the high beam dips when it senses oncoming traffic), i'm talking about dynamic cornering lights (which as I understand it, is when the headlight changes direction depending on steering input). This cornering light is listed on the spec sheet for the Golf R, but not on the GTI, but when i asked the dealer (twice now), he insisted that the headlight of the GTI will still changes direction with steering input (despite not having dynamic cornering light listed as part of the spec of the GTI).

So my question is really, does the headlight of the GTI changes direction with steering input? (I can't know myself as I have not test/will not be able to test drive a MY19 GTI at night time)
I have also noticed that the MY19 GTI only comes with single daytime running LED light instead of the twin daytime running light that MY18 GTI comes with, which I also don't understand why VW australia has made this change.

The Auto dipping is called HBA....High Beam Assist

Even VW get some of this stuff wrong in their literature and a lot of owners think they have one thing and they have another. DLA with LED lights is a different animal altogether, it shapes the beam to suit the traffic on the road to avoid blinding them. A lot of people think that HBA is in fact DLA and it isn't. As for cornering and the lights following the steering wheel angle I am as confused as you.

oh dear, sounds like its more confusing than i initially thought. Hopefully a MY19 GTI owner can spill some light on this. Regardless I should be placing an order for one soon so if no reply before then I guess I'll find out myself!

Not sure if I can help, but I have a MY18 GTI with DAP, it has lights that turn with the wheel, the corner light that comes on as you turn at low speeds, high beam assist and has twin DRL. My understanding the MY19 comes with DAP standard now.

                    Are your lights LED?

Have the MY19 GTI with the Luxury and Sound/Vision Pack. Can confirm that you get dynamic cornering lights and also at low speed an extra light comes on in the direction in which you indicate/turn (whichever action comes first) at low speed which is a nice touch.

Also noticed that you only get the single bar DRL on each side with the MY19 which is different to the MY18 which is a little odd. It looks like the LED's are there so maybe this is just a simple VCDS/OBDELEVEN coding?

                      Does anyone know?

                        Yes. LED headlights.

The problem is DLA means different things to different people. DLA to me means headlight beam shaping to prevent glare to other road users and not cornering lights.

^^^^ Do you own, or do you have access to a diagnostic cable -something like VCDS, OBDeleven, or similar?

I'm not entirely sure about DLA. but in general- If so, check the setting for the adaptation channel static AFS light-Vorschrift which lives in the BCM (the control module @ address hex09). "AFS" is VW's acronym for "Adaptive Frontlighting System" and it refers to the operation of the "Cornering light CAN bus". "Vorschrif" is German for "Regulation". So, this channel determines what set of road rules (if any) the car will use to manage the cornering light function. If the value of this channel is ECE R119 then more than likely, your car does have an active AFS facility.

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.
