Probably because the mechanics were not qualified/trained/licenced in refrigeration.

There is never any discussion beyond that because there has been no definite fix. You jest of course when you describe the girl as 12 years of age.

"What is normally done in cases like this AC issue is if the leak is not apparent the system is recharged, a dye added and the customer asked to drive the car and report back if the problem occurs again."That is exactly what I expected to happen in almost those exact words but was not to be. i was charged $157 to diagnose the gas was gone, it was recharged, i had to request the die. I was told I "could" bring it back in 5000ks and if it needed charging again i would be charged again if they could not find any leak.

Remember to date they have found not leak.

          Todays update.

I was promised the refund in writing by VW Australia's Head of customer Service. Bill Buckle is reneging on the deal. They are now "working thru the issue with the dealer." This is outrageous, can you imagine Harvey Norman allowing one of this franchised dealers to damage the brand name like this. VW seem to have no control over the dealerships.

That is relatively common whether you choose to believe it or not. If it is under warranty then the customer is not charged for the initial AC service and gas but if it is not warranty then the customer has to pay even if the leak cannot be found, the owner is then asked to bring the vehicle back if it happens again. The reason for that is obvious, if the leak does not re-occur and the vehicle owner does not return for further work then the work shop is out that money. If a customer refused to pay me on that basis then I would discharge the system and send them on their way. Either way I am out of pocket but I am not going to be out of pocket and the owner drive away with a free re-gas.

You or others need to read the law as it was changed in mid 2018. It is completely illegal to place car back on the road with a charged A/C system with a known or unknown leak, If the gas escaped there is a leak, if the tech is incompetence and cant find the leak that is not the leak is still there. This is the whole reason VW finally came to the party.

I think what he said to you is, that your opinion doesn’t matter. The car was repaired by authorised dealer and was found to be OK to drive on the roads. It doesn’t get more legal than that.

Is your car still losing the refrigerant or not?

OK you don't get your car back with a charged system, problem fixed. I will discharge it with you as a witness and hand the car back in the same condition it came in with. I don't care whether it never works again, it isn't me riding around in it so I am not inconvenienced and one customer less won't bother me. That is exactly what would happen and bring the law on because I have not supplied a car that is breaking it. Happy Days!

Aren't cars and their components supposed to be "fit for purpose" ? Somehow I think an aircon that doesn't cool (or works for a short time then stops working because all the gas has leaked out) kinda fails that test. And the ACCC has some laws as well covering that exact situation.

So VW can't wriggle off the hook entirely, regardless of what nonsense one of their agents (the offending VW dealer) are trying to claim (ie we haven't found the leak so there definitely isn't one).

I totally agree but if I can't find the problem or do not have the equipment or skills to do it then the vehicle gets returned to the owner ungassed if that is the legislation and let someone else sort it out, in fact there is now a legal obligation to do just that the way I see it.

All we know is, that it didn’t leak second time since the dealer repair/re fill it. I understand that the OP is just chasing his refund, or do I misunderstand it?

I’ve read the first post again and IMO, it could be solved without heated argument, which it was according to first few lines in the OP.

I believe that one achieves more dealing with this kind of issue (charged for warranty work) any kind of issue with being calm. I’d have just paid them and contacted the head office immediately. I’ve done that in past and not just once, it was always very effective and quick.
