  • Remote key stopped working

    Hi forum
One of my remote keys has stopped working. Lucky there's a second one.
I checked the battery with a multimeter and it seems ok at ~ 2.75 volts, but replaced it anyway.
There's no blinking red led when any button is pressed.
Is there some way to "reset" these devices, or is this covered by warranty ?
TIA's for any tips or clues.

Has it been dropped, or gotten wet?

    They don't like that.

There should be a re-sync procedure somewhere online you can try.

Neither impact nor water damage. Its been lovingly cared for.

I can only find re-sync procedures for cars with a keyed ignition switch in the steering column.
What to do for cars with key-less entry and start ?

Battery wrong way round ? It is easy to do.

Or corrosion on battery contacts (possibly from a previous battery that leaked).

Or (least likely), new battery is also faulty (it happens, particularly with cheaper ones and fakes)

As a quick fault finding test - take the known "good" battery from the remote that works and try it out in your non-working remote.

Thanks for suggestions, but I already tried all that. There's no corrosion, These fobs are like new, except that one doesn't work.

If the red light doesn't come on when a button is pressed after putting a known working battery in then its an internal electronic fault.

It could be the IR transmitter has failed. I'd be pushing your dealer for a new one, how old is the remote?

The car is ~ 18 months old, hence my question in original post wondering whether these key fobs are covered by warranty.

If they are as new as you describe it should be replaced under warranty. Accessories are covered under warranty with the car, only misuse, damage and wear and tear would void a fob warranty. Neither of those sound the case here.

What are the chances of both key batteries dying within a couple of days of each other, especially when one is used all the time and the other not at all? Key one died last Thursday when I needed to go somewhere and key two on Saturday when I was one my way to a photoshoot. Luckily they're easily replaced and don't need recoding.

Mine both lasted almost five years.
Replaced them because I thought it was about time.

The second battery was probably almost out of charge before you started using it, and using it consumed what little charge was left. As Idle says, it is easier/more convenient to replace them before they go flat.

I've read of VWs with keyless entry needing new batteries after only 12 - 18 months. My Octavia & T5 batteries seem to last over 5 years (but neither gets used every day).

Mine is keyless and they lasted just short of 2 years. Similar to yourself, my Yeti's were at 5 years and still going strong when I sold it.

I've just checked and replaced the batteries in my remotes:

Golf R (keyless) batteries had 20% charge 25 months after being built

Octavia & Transporter batteries all had 60% charge after more than 5 years.

To check battery push the lock or unlock button of the remote while engine running. If battery getting low you will get a message in MFD to the effect of “check remote battery”. This on a 2018 model with keyless.
