Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I just use a clean dry microfibre cloth with minimal pressure to avoid scratching. No protection.

Agreed. I’ve almost considered subbing in a wrecked GTI’s trim to replace the piano black dusty smudgy look looks so ****.

Just keep a microfibre cloth in the console. Plenty of simple opportunities for wipeovers while waiting at traffic lights.
          YMMV

Looks great when new and clean, looks crappy when dusty. But I knew that when I bought the car... as @bgroper said, microfibre cloth. I keep a microfibre noodle cloth in the glovebox and give the dash etc a wipe over fairly regularly. And every weekend when my wife and I wash and vacuum our cars, we use a brush head on the vacuum to get any remainder out of joins, vents etc.
            Cheers

I use Poorboys Natural Look to wipe on all trim, leather, dash and piano.
It is fantastic! Restores everything to brand new.

I use a blue microfibre “glass” cleaning cloth. Works well on clear instrument cluster too.

I hate Piano black plastic so much. I have one of those microfibers designed for glass in my centre console. I pull it out and use it to wipe over the plastics, flip and use the other side for the huge touchscreen that loves to show off finger prints.

I've found there isn't much you can do to protect (apart from wraps and dips). When wiping, avoid circular motions, you will put micro scratches in it no matter how careful you are, straight scratches are harder to see than circles and polish out easier.
With the right tools and/or time you can polish it back to factory finish with a plastic polish.

Some glass cleaner to lubricate against scratching and to clean fingerprints etc and a soft microfibre cloth to buff off.

Wrap it in flat black has occurred to me, bloody horrible stuff but we will have wait until the next fashion trend to get rid of it in cars. I don't bother trying to keep it clean as that is mission impossible, it gets a wipe when the car gets a vacuum.

I had a mate who vacuumed his piano black trim in his XR50 with the brush head, the same brush head he used on the floor. Scratched it so bad he decided to just wrap everything in that tacky carbon fibre. Actually he took his time and it came up pretty good. Falcon interior comes apart in minutes. Can't imagine the GTI would be that easy.
