  • FM station presents not being saved

I've recently bought a MY2015 R, and I've noted that the infotainment unit never saves the radio station presets that I make, when I restart the car. It is as if the battery has been disconnected.

The infotainment unit seems to remember all other non radio settings.

Not being smart... but are you actually saving them as a preset?

Yes I am. I am pressing an empty present button (there are 6 on each screen, each one labelled as Empty) and it saves the current station on whichever empty bottom I press. This renames the empty present button with the name of the station I just saved. But when I turn on the radio again after it has been off, the saved station are lost.

Just checked the manual for the head unit. Am definitely saving the stations the correct way, with an audible confirmation tone.

Is there a separate fuse for the headunit memory? Have you tried factory defaulting all settings in the headunit? Or try rebooting it (hold down power button for 30 seconds or something)?

Kevlarman: No the preset memory function on the MIB is not separately fused - but I agree that it's worth trying the MIB reset procedure - beacuse it's an easy try (and becasue it's the standard suggestion for ALL IT/Digital problems!! )

This would annoy the **** out of me! As others have suggested, try resetting the unit. Is there any factory warranty left on the car?

I'm not sure. Car is a 2015. Just bought as the second owner. Also this unit is a retrofitted MIB1 with 8" screen. It was apparently fitted by a VW dealer but I don't know it it would be under warranty even if the car itself is.

I'm having absolutely no luck in updating the GPS maps and speed camera POIs. I read a while back on this forum before I joined that that was a Sydney based expert with the VW infotainment units, so I think I'll find out who that is.

I tried the MIB reset procedure*, but it didn't clear my settings. There is a factory setting option in the Menu and that did clear most settings (I know as I had to relink by pone via bluetooth). Unfortunately it hasn't fixed the radio station memory problem.

                  *Can anyone confirm the
                  MIB reset procedure?
It is holding down the power button for 10 or 30 seconds?
Should radio be already on before this is done?
Should ignition be on or off?

^^^ yes that's how the reset procedure is done:
                    Turn-on the MIB
Press and keep holding down the ON/OFF button - the MIB will turn-off and it will then turn-on again
When the MIB has turned-on again, release the ON/OFF button

The MIB has been retrofitted? Sounds suspicious - do you have access to a diagnostic cable (VCDS, OBDeleven, or VCP)? If so, are there any error messages?

Thanks for the confirmation Don. The unit turns back on with the "Welcome to Volkswagen" message with the VW and R logos but the unit will still not save the FM stations when it is turned back on.

It will save the stations if you turn it off momentarily then on but if you leave the car then come back a little later the presets will be gone.

This procedure hasn't cleared the others settings either, which is strange.

The MIB was retrofitted and installed by a VW dealer and was arranged by the previous owner. I think the hardware was supplied by Euro Car Upgrades/JKU.

Everything works seamlessly (as far as I can tell) , the navigation, the CD player, the radio (!), media player with SC card (I just found out it can play music in the FLAC format, which is great ), voice control (although I haven't full tested it), the feed through to the multi function display between the speedo and tacho, and the reverse camera. The unit responds to the steering wheels controls.

I don't have access to any diagnostic cables etc. I never get any error messages on the screen through.

As I have this issue, as well the the inability to updates the maps and install my own POI's (even though I've read of the threads and the instructions on this forum and vwgolf.net.au - who still haven't activated my membership ) it seems like the unit is locked from any changes being made.

I was thinking of going to a VW dealer but the car is not due for a service for quite some time, and I'm worried that they will rip me off and/or not be able to fix everything, depending on the knowledge of the particular dealer, as some are worse than others etc. Judging from some posts, the dealer may not charge much or anything if they are doing a regular service on the car.

Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with paying someone if need be to sort this stuff out, as long as I don't get charged something ridiculous.

Do Euro Car Upgrades have an agent in Sydney? If not, can anyone recommend someone in Sydney that I can take it to to have a look?

                        My infotainment unit is schizophrenic.

After all this time, the radio stations are now saved. I toggled a couple of infotainment settings via my OBD11 that to my mind did not seem related to this issue and it somehow has fixed my problem....
