Man I feel so stupid...

So I went out today and got 5L of Castrol Edge Long Life 5-30w. They didn't have anything smaller, so 5L it was.

I get home, shut down the engine, let it sit for about 20min, check the oil. Oil is full. Like... maximum. I check it again 4 times - same result. I let it sit for a few more hours... check it again. Full. Not a drop has been used. Then I realise what has happened.

When I checked the oil the other day, I didn't push the dip stick all the way in to the point where the clips grab on. I must have only pushed it in as far for the clips that hold it in place to start touching then must have pulled it out. When doing that - the oil is only half way between min & max. Pushing it all the way in so the clips hook on and it's properly seated, then pulling it back out - not a drop is missing.

So now I've got 5L oil I didn't need. Ahh well - I'm sure I might need it one day.

We all make mistakes....thankfully you noticed otherwise you may have over filled and that wouldn’t have been good. In any case just take the oil in for your next service + 1 liter and you will save heaps on your service cost. Last time I looked VW charge $180+ for the oil, bet you bought it for a lot less than that.

Hi all you might need to hang onto it if keeping the car long term as my14 comfortline at 150000km uses about a litre of oil in 3500km and local mechanic told me its common for them to use oil . I used the castrol edge 5w 40 last oil change instead of 5w30 as it might slow the oil consumption a bit and its 502 rated . I was using 5w30 LL edge .

had issues with oil burning too quickly with CASTROL / VW OEM

Liqui Moly and Motul are better than Castrol.
