Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Which engine oil for EA888 206kw?

    Hi guys,
Thought in this part of the forum to get more visibility.

I noticed my Arteon needs a little top up of oil. Assuming the oil was right on the line of the "full mark" when I bought the car, it's now about half way down to the "minimum" line after about 7000km. Totally expected being a new engine and all.

I know VW use Castrol oils from the factory, and I'm assuming to top it up with the same oil I'd be putting in Castrol Edge (which meets the VW 502 00 specification).

What I'm unsure about is what weight of oil I should be using? I see that the 5-30w and the 0-40w both meet the VW 502 00 spec.

I remember something about the weight of the oil used being relevant to the climate/driving conditions. I'm in Brisbane so...I assume 5-30w? Or should I be using the 0-40w?

I use Penrite Enviro+ 5W-30. Meets VW 504/507 requirements. This is superior to the 502/505 standard, and AFAIK only comes in 5W-30.

This information is all over the web.

Use any brand of your choice, however ensure it meets VW 504 00 / VW 507 00 spec (best to look for an "Approved" Oil also)...

For me personally it is Castrol Edge 5W-30 LL; Castrol Australia - NetLube

Best thing is you can top our your misses car also!!!

I'm a VW, Euro, Turbo newbie. Having had only Toyotas for the last 10 years I have NEVER topped up the oil and usually do the servicing my self sometimes months late.

My Arteon being a new car I will be servicing at the dealership but should I be checking the oil? Driving N/A Toyotas has spoiled me over the years.

Ok so... this is why I asked.

So everyone here reckons the VW 504 Long Life oil.
However in the user manual, it says VW 504 is for "Flexible Service" schedules. And VW 502 should be used for "time/mileage" based service scheduling. I would assume time/mileage based servicing to be "12 months or 15,000km - whichever occurs first".

Also it says in the Arteon Manual (page 269)….
The use of engine oils complaint with the VW 504 00, VW 507 00, and VW 508 00 specifications requires a fuel quality compliant with EN 228 (petrol) and EN 590 (diesel), or fuel of an equivalent quality.
I can't find anywhere that says BP Ultimate (98RON) meets that standard. I found a thing on a UK website where it says BP Ultimate 102 (102RON) does meet the standard. But we don't get that here in Australia.

I'm not trying to be difficult... I'm just trying to get to the facts.

Also there's a foot note on page 269 of the manual that says
"The engine oil VW 502 00 must be used if the fuel grade does not comply with EN 228"
So I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this.

^ahh - I missed this at the top.

OK....so the 504/507 standard is better than the 502/505 standard. So even if I have 502 oil in there now, it won't hurt if I put in 504 oil and in fact it'll actually be better?

                          To clear all this up...

504/507 is the recommended oil for petrol engines for the Australian market, and is what's in the sump from the factory.

HOWEVER, 502/505 can be used in petrol engines, as long it's drained no later than 15K. 504/507 is designed for extended drain intervals in markets where services can be spaced out to 30,000kms. DO NOT do this here in Australia, whilst it's under warranty, as we have fixed intervals of 15K or 12 months, whichever comes first. No ifs, ands or buts. I'd probably not put the 502/505 oil in either, until the warranty lapses. Still a grey area, as far as I'm aware, in terms of your warranty.

It must state on the label that it has the 502/505 or 504/507 APPROVAL. Terms like "Meets or exceeds" are not considered an approval, therefore in the event of a warranty claim for excess oil consumption or engine failure, the claim may be denied.

My recommendations as a specialist VW repairer, and former dealer tech:

                          - Whilst under warranty, have the dealer do the top-ups between services, and ensure it's noted in their system. IF you go for an excess oil consumption claim, the evidence is all there.
                          - Whilst under warranty, only use the 504/507 oil, regardless of petrol or diesel.
                          - Whilst under warranty, find out what the dealer or your preferred repairer uses in your car, and buy a litre of that just in case.

                              Man I feel so stupid...

So I went out today and got 5L of Castrol Edge Long Life 5-30w. They didn't have anything smaller, so 5L it was.

I get home, shut down the engine, let it sit for about 20min, check the oil. Oil is full. Like... maximum. I check it again 4 times - same result. I let it sit for a few more hours... check it again. Full. Not a drop has been used. Then I realise what has happened.

When I checked the oil the other day, I didn't push the dip stick all the way in to the point where the clips grab on. I must have only pushed it in as far for the clips that hold it in place to start touching then must have pulled it out. When doing that - the oil is only half way between min & max. Pushing it all the way in so the clips hook on and it's properly seated, then pulling it back out - not a drop is missing.

So now I've got 5L oil I didn't need. Ahh well - I'm sure I might need it one day.
