  • Key Fob Battery Life

I went to unlock my car this morning and my key fob wouldn't work. I tried pressing it a few times and noticed that the red light wasn't singalling. I've had the car for about twenty months since new and this seems disapointing for it to be dead so quicklly.

I dont suppose that the warranty covers this.

Just replace the battery in the key, and re-sync it to the car.

It's only $6 for a packet of batteries.

Might not even need to re-sync. The fob battery for my wifes Passat only lasted about 18 or so months - replaced it on the weekend.

If having to replace a battery in a remote every ~18 months disappoints you.....chill dude
      Cheers

Didn't you get the 'replace keyfob battery' message on your MFD?

My battery (2025) lasted 7-8 months, which seems very low, especially since it's not a daily driver. I'm thinking my trial of a 2032 battery (which lasted less than 3 weeks), may have negatively impacted the keyfob?..

CR2032 is the same as CR2025 except that it's slightly thicker and has a higher capacity. There is no way a CR2032 can "negatively" affect the keyfob. If it only lasted 3 months then there is something wrong with your battery. My daily use car key - original CR 2025 lasted about 2 years. I've since replaced it with a CR2032 (which takes a little bit of force to close the cover since it's thicker but still fits fine) has lasted 15 months so far.

Thanks DKC. Something's definitely not right with my battery &/or keyfob. Fyi, I'm only going off when the "replace keyfob battery" prompt appeared on the MFD - the battery kept working for weeks after that initial prompt appeared, so I'm not 100% sure if was a false-prompt. I'll keep an eye on it once the battery's replaced (currently using keyfob #2 with its original battery, so can't measure it with much accuracy).

No nothing showed up, I had noticed that the keyless entry was getting a bit slower though. On my last car the battery lasted for about five years.

I’ve got some spare 3V CR2032 batteries. I know that it’s supposed to be fitted with a CR2025 battery but do you think that it would be ok using the CR2032, seeing as I already have some ready to go.

Was answered above The only difference is the 2032 is 7thou thicker and has slightly higher capacity Might stretch the clips holding it in. I would buy the correct one but thats me

The key fob for my Caddy Maxi Life has lasted around 7 years. It started missing presses so opened it up to replace the battery. The original battery is clearly a CR2032, which is what I replaced it with. I got the battery from Woolworths supermarket.

So I went to change the battery last night and popped it open easily enough and took out the existing battery and replaced it with a CR2032. It kept popping out, which is to be expected. However even if I pressed the battery in place and put the cover back on and tried pressing the buttons, no red signal was emitting from the key. Would anyone know why this maybe?

Battery is back to front or if original was a 2025 its too thick and not contacting properly

No it was definitely the right way round. I think that it was just not contacting properly, probably because as you say it is slightly larger than the 2025. However tried again and managed to get the red light to flash when pressing one of the buttons and put the cover back on with a bit of force.

I had a very similar experience, wasn't impressed with the battery life of the key. I just replaced the battery with a good quality one.
