  • Turbo needs replacing (wastegate)

Took my car to Essendon VW dealership to get the wastegate clip installed to fix the buzz/rattle on deceleration
However after this had been installed it reduced the buzzing to a minimal, though VW has told me that the issue was not fixed and my turbo needs replacing which they quoted me $4k. Unfortunately my warranty has run out and definitely not going to go in that direction. What kind of options would be best to solve this issue?

Purchase a 2nd hand turbo? get the turbo reconditioned or get something completely different?

My Car is at 102000Kms Golf GTi Mk6 2010, stock turbo.
If you need any additional spec info please let me know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

Has the turbo stopped working all together or just a rattle?

The car is still running, as well as the turbo just the noise is still present.

I was looking at perhaps upgrading to a Stage 1 down the track, but I assume this wouldn't be a wise option considering the condition of the turbo ?

      Cheers.

I dont think its a big deal mate. If it were my car I'd just drive it. And tune it too. I wouldn't be putting a turbo on it, until it stopped boosting.

Would tuning to stage 1 cause problems for the turbo with this current issue?

Are you able to get a quote from a specialist for the same work and also a quote for a second hand turbo ?

No I don't think it would if there's just a rattle off the actuator and it still works.

Well, I'm in the process of getting my cluster lighting repaired and asked the question on reconditioning which they do.
Awaiting to get a quote this morning.
Do you guys recommend reconditioned turbos?

Did the dealer actually say what's wrong with the turbo specifically? There might be more to this than a rattly actuator?

VW told me that the wastegate was causing the problem and couldn't be repaired. This is what was on the invoice.

It might be causing a rattle but for 4K I'd live with it, get it tuned, with a downpipe, cat back exhaust, coilovers and still have change for great night at the casino.

Haha, I like the way you think however I'm not looking to offload that much coin at this stage. Will a tune on its own suffice without the addons?

                        Cheers

Is the rattle from the turbo CHRA or the wastegate valve?

If it's a worn out bearing on the turbo the shaft will wiggle when you try and move it with a hose off. In that case you can order a pre balanced CHRA (center housing rotating assembly) which is a fancy term of all the important insides of the turbo. Mellet in the UK make good stock replacement ones for a couple of hundred bucks. No idea what labour to install would be but it won't be $4,000 and I sure as sh$t wouldnt be visiting a VW $tealership after warranty for anything.
