Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk6 Gti Small Radiator Fan Fix

    Hi all,
Just thought i'd throw few photo's up of a repair to the small radiator fan, my large one had started going faster then usual and making noise as well documented. My car is first of the Mk6 Gti 09 build with 95k on it.
I pulled apart hoping Brushes were stuck but unfortunately they were worn out. So I replaced them, hopefully solder will handle the load.

It required cutting old brushes out and blowing a lot of dust out and cleaning rotor up. Also bit of grease on bearing bush.
I used multigrips to squeeze V tabs together and later spread back apart, but be careful, to much force will break them.

I've seen some post suggest a lot of parts removal to get fans out of car, but I found it only necessary to remove air intake pieces off radiator top and the lower plastic shroud then pull fans out through bottom.

Were the brushes available as a spare part for the fan or did you find some that are a similar size?
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

No not spares, I went to local auto electrician, he found some to match. They were 10mm/6mm, and about 15mm in depth. They need to be a nice fit but able to slide easily. All up cost $20 and bit time.
