Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf Mark 6 Reset ECU

    Hi,

I want to reset my ECU. I've been advised to disconnect the battery overnight. Then in the morning touch the positive and negative together (no battery involvement) before reconnecting the battery.

Any anyone done this and used a VAG-COM or similar to see if it actually changes (removes data) anything?

    Cheers

Disconnecting the battery wont work, regardless of how long its disconnected for. I wouldnt connect the + and - terminals together.....recipe for disaster and certainly wont reset the ECU.

Why are you trying to reset it?

It relates to my other thread - How my car takes two seconds to recognise that I've lifted off out of the throttle. Spoke with an old friend that is a mechanic and also supports and distributes Autologic and it was his suggestion.

It would reset the ECU, clear memory and its adaptive learning

Just deleting faults with VCDS even if there are none will reset the fuel trims. I don't see it fixing your problem though.

          I don't have VCDS/VAG-COM . But anything is worth a try.

The other night the car was behaving how it should... for 20 minutes.

It hardware then, the software cannot change.

Having a VCDS lead is really useful with a modern car, if you want to diagnose stuff yourself. You cannot rely on it throwing codes though.
