  • MFD Error - "AFS - No Bend Lighting"

My car is fitted with the dynamic cornering HID lights. In the last couple of weeks I have been getting an error come up on my MFD saying that the AFS (bend lighting) is not working.

Normally when I start the car (when it's dark) the lights do their little swivel dance to test the AFS operation. It still does this, which proves that the motors and control system still works, but after anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes of driving, the error light pops up and it beeps at me, then the cornering headlights no longer swivel.

Has anyone had this error or heard of it? I'm wondering whether it might be a problem with a steering position sensor or something?

I think you'd have more faults and error lights coming up if it was a problem with the steering angle sensor - that would affect ESP amongst other things. You'll want to scan the car with VCDS.

I recently had the lights replaced due to a minor front end bingle, and when I picked up the car there was an issue with the headlights but I think it was just because the battery was knackered from sitting for 3 weeks with the keys in the ignition... could be related to that, could be something dislodged or misaligned from the crash, or could be entirely unrelated... next service is due soonish so I will wait until then.
Thanks for the replies, I'll update once a solution is found.

Still having this issue. I got VW to have a look at the last service, they reckon they couldn't replicate the fault. Don't know how hard they tried but anyway... just thought I'd give this a bit of a bump and see if anyone has any theories?

Might be abit dumb, but have you checked all the lights are working? I have had it before when one of the parkers are out and can cause issues like this, usually it's hard to spot one being out as they are hidden from view, but just have a good look around...

Yeah everything is working fine. Even the cornering headlights work fine until the light comes on.

                Hi,

How did it go? Did you manage to fix it?

No I have been very slack and haven't taken it in to the shop yet. I will try and get it in this week. My gut feeling is probably something wrong with the drivers side headlight. When the dynamic lights are working the drivers side light is a bit jerky/laggy compared to the other one. Could be as simple as something lodged in the mechanism or something...

Hey mate, put your lights on (headlights) turn your steering all the way to the right - there should be a cornering light that comes on, then turn steering all the way to the left, the other cornering light should now come on instead, chances are one of these globes are blown which will cause this fault... If you have VCDS you can manually operate these lights to see if they are working, like I said before, 9/10 this is what this fault is .

It's not that, I don't have cornering fog lights. I have the HID headlights that are actually motorised and turn at road speeds when going around corners and also up and down (self levelling)

Had it tested by an auto electrician and he couldn't fix it, so it's booked in to VW this week. He narrowed it down to probably a faulty module (whatever that means...)

So I was reading this thread and others last night about the bending light error.... Low and behold I got it for the first time this morning [emoji19]

Anyway, seems my left bending light globe isn't functioning.. I'm yet to have any sort of proper look, will try swapping the globes over first.

Had the same on a CC a month or so ago.

Had a bulb out, so replaced that and all was well.

Do the basics, and check that all lights are functioning.

Had this for 2 weeks. VW just replaced the cornering bulb - $31 bulb, $29 labour on 2.5 year old Golf. Seems pretty pricey and early to geta bub blown. I wonder if there are LED options so I'm not forking out $60 every few years.
