Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Continual problems

    Hi all,

I'm new to this forum out of utter frustration with the problems I have had with my 2012 mk6 90 TSI golf.

About a year ago my car cut out while turning in the middle of a small intersection. Everything went completely dead, breaks ceased to function, lights, electronics.. only had the handbrake left to bring me to a complete stop. Quite a frightening occurrence, so took it in to my local dealer who checked the car and found no issue. A few months passed and everything was okay, until the car cut out in the same circumstances once again. Took the car back to the dealer and they replaced the clutch. In the past 5 months, the car has not cut out again, but it continues to make a clunking metal-on-metal type noise when the car is cold. I took it back to the dealer once again, and they confirmed this didn't seem normal, so the clutch was replaced again. I am still not satisfied with the noises the car is making.

Tonight driving home, a yellow light indicating a fault in the catalytic converter has appeared and remained on my dashboard. I have no idea if all these issues are related, but I am quite frankly losing my patience with VW who continue to assure me any problem has been resolved, only for the problem to persist, and additional problems to arise. The manual says I need to get to my local workshop, but in all honesty I do not feel comfortable driving the car with the light on, given the cut outs that have occurred.

The car has only done 30,000km, so is relatively new still. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice as to what I should do. I wholeheartedly love the golf, but not with the issues I have experienced.

    Thanks in advance!

And one more thing, every time it has cut out and gone in for a service, the dealer advises that there were NO faults logged in the computer.

Perhaps get yourself the free ware VCDS software and an ebay OBD cable so you can scan yourself for piece of mind. You won't get great detail of the faults on the free copy, but it gives the code which you can search on the net. For the VCDS Lite version which is more detailed and more versatile, it's US$100, plus the ebay cable, otherwise a genuine VCDS cable is ~US$300 from recollection.

You say they have replaced the clutch, but haven't specified whether the car is DSG or manual? If DSG, the clutch packs in the gearbox are known to slip in stop start traffic and can wear out quickly.

That was resolved with switching to synthetic oil.
Also ensure you always put your foot hard on the brake when stopping completely (even for a 10 second stop) so the dsg can completely disengage the clutch, otherwise its like riding a clutch in a manual

There was a recall for it, but the issue is not resolved. Clutch pack failures do continue to occur in the DQ200 (although certainly not with the frequency they did with earlier build boxes).

Most of those failures are related to driver error or the lower end Golfs.

The DQ200 dry-clutch 7-speed I referred to is only fitted to the lower-end Golfs.

Although certain driving techniques may increase clutch pack wear, the failures themselves are not attributable to driver error.

I though they changed from syn to mineral oil to resolve DSG issues.

You might be best to move on to another car. It seems the lower end VW cars suffer from all the bad bits. I did my homework when buying a Mk5 and avoided the lower displacement engines and 7speed DSG. Glad I did, no issues so far.
It''s a shame the MK6 has similar issues.
