Well, the S3 should perform like the R and have a nicer interior and be less Golf-like so that pretty much solves it. The Stang still pulls at my heart but stupid choice really. The test drive will be the decider though, the S3 may be just too bland. Busy watching every video review I can find
RS3 would be sweet but just out of reach

A guy at my work has a Mk7 R with a stage 1 APR tune and holy damn does it move for a 2.0L 4 cyl. Ive driven it a few times now and its addictive. Even at stage 1, it pulls so much stronger than my old stage 2+ Mk6 R. It made 232kw at all 4 wheels vs my Mk6 R which was 208kw on the same dyno.
Given the S3 shares the same engine and trans, i think you will be happy with the powerplant. With that level of power and torque, plus the grip from the AWD, you will win just about every traffic light grand prix you enter. So fast from point to point.
Im not sold on the Mk7 R shape, but the S3 sedan is gorgeous - especially in red or that blue.
Going ahead with an S3 sedan in blue. Have to drive to Brisbane for a test drive as no local cars on offer. Building option list over the next few days. Thanks to everyone that replied.

We are heading away overseas soon so will most likely delay until we get back. Not rushing on this unless the right car turns up and priced right. Still over a year of warranty left on the R. Will be paying cash and private sale on the R.
Really appreciate all the comments.

Be keen to hear your experience, the drive is less visceral ( and I use the word loosely) to the R, especially given you have it tuned. It feels smoother, quieter and lighter to drive. I found the headroom in the back lower and this does have some visibility compromise. The tech is outstanding thought that dash mounted display takes a bit to get used to. It looks heaps better with the performance pack options. As for colour I would have ordered the sepang blue just because it is so nice but got up close to one I. The car park on the weekend and for some reason it didn't grab like I expected it to.. Might look at the black or grey

From what a few guys on ozaudi said that had Rs, the S3 is quicker and sounds better (thanks to the Audi version of the soundaktor). The adjustability of the steering, changes, suspension etc individually will be good but the test drive will settle it. I couldn't go back to dark colours so will be the blue for sure, looks great under low light and really seems to show off in the sun. The screen will be interesting but it's nice that you can keep it down if not needed unlike a fixed screen.
If the test drive goes well, we should have one late October but if it disappoints, will hold the R for a while longer and see what shows up in 2016
The crunch will come when the deal is to be done. I'm interested to see what they offer. We have access to the 3 year free servicing offer but trade in could be fun
Will be nice to move away from a hatch. The dealer has given me some local contacts for aftermarket stuff
