Cam Cover Leak

Took my GTI in for a service a few weeks ago and they rang me to tell me that there was a leak in the "Cam Housing"
They wanted to charge me $1500 to repair it, but they said as it was out of warranty for only a year that they would call VW and see if they would help.
That lowered the cost down to $860 but only if I got it repaired within 30 days.

Does this sound right?
I mean is it really necessary to do and can I get it done elsewhere for cheaper, but just as good of a job?

Get a second opinion, because on some of them, the sealant remains tacky, and doesn't fully dry. This is normal, even if it does attract dust and dirt. It should be translucent red in color, if its the too I'm thinking of.

If it's the cam position sensor leak theres a superseeded part, or else just replace the oil seal not the actual sensor itself..
