Just go with the goodwill. I had a bevel box leak out of warranty and had invoices showing it had been looked at during services while still in warranty. VW came back with a goodwill fix which was a $3500 job. If you ask them to put it through goodwill they cant really refuse you. Its not their job to decide if a goodwill will get approved or not. That is VWs decision.

Yep, had a similar issue here with an airconditioning system that was slow to start cooling... Car was out of warranty but VW did a 'goodwill' repair because of a good service history - new compressor, receiver/dryer and regas.. $2500 worth. Aircond cools well enough to store meat (well, almost)..

I've send one of my customer with his Skoda (a bit over 100k km) that was almost 1 year out of warranty, with the faulty turbocharger and they have replaced the Turbo free of charge as well.
It's worth to mention that he bought the Octavia from them secondhand with 10k km on the clock, I did all his servicing (not a dealer). So, it really doesn't matter what service history you have with the VW, it's how you approach them.

Agree with Transporter here ive sent many back and some pretty much have had most of services by me and they were still happy to honor the repairs. Most of the manifolds log codes. I personally heard this noise and is a spin that its a manifold noise, but good that it is though. I was getting the noise on tap and it was resonating really bad. Top be fair it was at the fuel pump end of the head , this is where I pinpointed the noise in conjuction with stumble so makes sense that the manifold flap actuator is just below that. And now your engine has its 3rd manifold!!!

Yes mate 3rd manifold. To be fair to you Jmac it wasn't until just before I went to VW that the stumble and noise happened every time I put the clutch in, and my mechanic thought it was the opposite end to you. VW explanation as to why it happens when the clutch is pushed in is because the engine is then under load. As soon as I showed them he did something under the bonnet that made it go away and said Intake Manifold. So these guys had a bit of an advantage due to me knowing it does it with the clutch pushed in. It's booked in for a week on Monday and I'll try to ask why no fault code was brought up. But without you Jmac I'd be none the wiser. Cheers mate.
